So this is the Pilot Custom 845 Urushi. The finish is Vermilion and the nib is Pilot's 18kt gold two-tone. But you can see all that. The Custom 845 Urushi is the full-size brother of the over-sized (or really super oversized lol) and number-less named Custom Urushi. Pilot USA does not import this pen so you will have to import it yourself directly from a Japanese retailer. The Vermilion finish to this pen is, to the best of my knowledge, exclusive to Tokyo Pen Shop Quill. I am not 100% of that but it seems to be the only place you reliably purchase this pen if you're not in Japan anyway. Even then, the Vermilion is not in constant production and seems to restock around fall/winter of the year and sells out quickly. The price I paid for this pen was around 500 50000 yen and the experience in purchasing was amazing. Tokyo Pen Shop Quill only carries a very curated selection of Pilot/Namiki pens and thoroughly inspect the pen as well as tunes the nib before shipping it. The packaging could not have been better and included a lovely letter thanking me for my purchase as well as a nifty pen cleaning tool that according to my post purchase questions, the shop owner makes himself. So that brings us to the nib. Pilot nibs are very reliable writers, no matter what price point, but these 18kt nibs are just something else. The shop owner himself does some adjustments that takes the quality to the next level. This is the smoothest fine nib I own and have ever used because if anything was smoother than this I would have bought it or not have sold it. This pen is my first Urushi pen and I doubt it will be my last. The feel of the urushi (which is the red/vermilion sections) has a subtle warm/soft-feeling that is very unique compared to resin/plastic. It seems to be very scratch resistant as well. Size wish is is pretty much the same as Pelikan M800 but weights just slightly less. The body does have some lovely gold ring furniture and is just... ugh I love it lol. The filling system is C/C.. yes piston snobs, I know.. but trust me, this thing is so pretty you won't care. While it might be C/C, it does use the venerable Con-70 push-button vacuum converter. The pen is something special really. Pens sometimes reflect the personality of their owners and other times give something back to the writer. This definitely gives back in the form of confidence that you cannot help but feel as how hold the powerful vermilion hue in your hands. This is the first pen I have ever owned that as made me question the need to own anything else. 10/10

After reading through this site quite extensively I have decided to finally drop in and say Hi. I have been enjoying writing with and reading about fountain pens after a long break of 15-20 years. Over the past few months I have been writing with a Lamy Safari f, a Lamy Al-star m, a Sailor Pro-Gear m, a Waterman Perspective m and a Pilot Metropolitan f. Of the lot my favourite has been the Sailor Pro Gear. My favourite ink is Montblanc Hadrian and Perle Noire. I use Kin-Mokusei to highlight. My favourite paper is Rhodia dot-grid. Though I also enjoy Rifle Paper Co.

(exhaling) OK ladies and gentleman. Right now I am compiling a list of my grail pens particularly from Japan and would really appreciate your input. I don't know how I got into this mindset but I really am researching seriously in determining a grail pen and it is between the four brands/pen type mentioned in the thread title. My plan is that IF sometimes in the future I visit Japan, I will be doing some pen hunting and pull the trigger on my grail pen (adjusting to future conditions of course). The price limit will be at max around $1100 so it will narrow down some of the model in the brands line up. I really wanted to include Namiki (Emperor) but $2000 is just too much of a stretch for me. I believe that most of them are similar in size (the Izumo being smallest out of the bunch) so I would not count them as a deciding factor. All are Urushi lacquered except the KoP at the price range although it is not a deciding factor for me. If you could provide the pros and cons of your preferred pens compared to the others in the list, please do share and thanks a lot!

As the title says, new colours are to be introduced in the Pilot Custom 74 demonstrator line. Namely Forest Green, Blue Black and Orange Red. I saw the news on reddit Pen Gallery from Malaysia has showed a pic and is selling them https://www.instagram.com/p/CJsrqDpDhvt/ I assume these will be available everywhere where the other demos are available (except that maddeningly blue and violet seem to be US exclusives?? WHY???) It would be nice if more colours were added to the regular 74, the 91, the Elite95s, 742 and 912. That said, my wallet thinks it's best as it is and I begrudgingly agree. What would really be super exciting though is if Pilot would introduce their Stub (SU) and Waverly (WA) nibs to the 74 and 91 (pretty please, if anyone from Pilot is reading!).

Hi, this vintage Pilot is pretty neat but the celluloid shrinkage has the cap threads mostly impossible to engage and impossible to secure as they run off the end. It is a functioning Japanese eyedropper (original packing cork) with an ebonite section which screws in and seals well so expanding the barrel doesn’t seem like the best option. The cap band is also loose, but the cap and barrel threads meeting is my primary concern. The barrel has nearly a mm of shrinkage apparent at the size decrease where the cap sits. Does anyone have any recommendations? It is such an interesting half-transparent pale purple and clear celluloid with hardly any yellowing I’d love to get it capping and writing again! Cheers!

Put them next to other colours and they're just grey; put them next to each other and the differences become pronounced. In this scan you can see my current selection of grey inks next to each other: Diamine Silver Fox (my basic clear grey, the one I chose over Diamine Grey and Herbin Gris Nuage), Diamine Earl Grey (the new kid on the block that triggered this new exploration), Iroshizuku fuyu-syogun and Diamine Graphite (an ink that I had tried and abandoned but with fond memories that made me get a new 30 ml bottle). I've given up trying to correct scans and monitors concerning colour but the above scan seems alright on my computer, except for the hues of Earl Grey and Graphite, which appear too bluish. The following photograph is a bit darker but closer to the colours I see in daylight. I hope this quick comparison helps anyone looking for a grey ink. It has reaffirmed my own preference for Silver Fox as the clearest grey but I'm quite taken with the shading of Earl Grey. All four inks are well-behaved, even in my often temperamental Pilot Capless pens.

First off, I wanted to give a big shout out for everybody that was able to attend the Dromgoole's Dallas Pen Show 2 weeks ago! We were extremely happy to put on an event like that, and you all helped make it a successful event. It was so great to get to see everybody! With that said we are doing a similar show in San Antonio November 6th-7th!. The show will be located at the Doubletree by Hilton San Antonio Northwest right off of Loop 1604 and I-10. 6809 N Loop 1604 W, San Antonio, TX 78249 There will be a special room rate of $82/night if signed up before the end of October, if you have any issues please reach out to us and we will be happy to assist. We want to make this show as fun as possible, but we are doing everything we can to make it a safe show for all vendors and attendees. By way of context... ...my girlfriend likes to do crosswords, and she has a habit of holding the pen with the cap off while she thinks. In the interest of getting her a pen that won't dry out, I've been on a Parker 51 style hooded-nib kick. I figured I'd get a cheap knock off or two for her to try so she could see if she likes that style. So a few days ago I bid on one of those "loose pen" lots from an eBay auction. Six pens for $15 is a pretty good day, any way you cut it. The first four pens where various HERO 616 / Jinhao 51A style pens, which was what I was after. The fifth pen was some kind of strange looking un-marked blingy pen with a standard Chinese #6 nib / feed combo (Iridium Point stamp, the feed looks identical with what you find in a Jinhao 159). But that's a story for another day, because the sixth pen... Well the sixth pen was this one: It seems to be a '60s or '70s vintage Pilot Lady Pocket pen. This one has a hooded nib, which is different from the pictures of similar pens I've found online. Even the steel nib versions of these pens from the '80s seem to be going for $20 - $30, and I have a kind of reluctant and excited hope that this is the 14k version! Since I spent roughly $4, I kind of feel like I made out like a bandit. I cleaned it off (using just soap and water) and flushed a lot of partly dried blue ink out of the collector. The finish on the exterior (the flowers and so on) is a bit pitted and scuffed - clearly the pen has had a life of use - but the nib itself seems to be as good as new. No pitting or scratches, and I barely had to realign it. I have a couple of questions: First: Information about this particular sort of pen seems to be thin on the internet. Does anyone know of a site, or someone who collects these pocket pens, who might have more pictures / information about the line? Second: When I opened it up, an o-ring fell out. It seems to be working just fine without the o-ring (I put a CON-20 in), but I wonder where the o-ring is really supposed to go? I haven't tried too hard to disassemble the pen, because it seems like a nice pen and I don't want to mess it up. I'm concerned that the nib/feed are glued in. - N

Can anyone tell me more or point me in a direction that will give me more information about a recent purchase? They came as bonuses with a Pilot Custom Black Stripe FP and I'm curious if there is a dating system and if the dark one is also a "Black Stripe" model. Thanks!

Hello guys, I am a mechanical pencil collector from China. It's my first time posting here in FPN. I have been seeking for a PILOT Automatic H-5005 Vanishing Point Mechanical Pencil for 5 years, and this is the 6th year. I think many of you have heard of it. It's very rare, and I already looked over ALL the websites that have a keyword "PILOT AUTOMATIC H-5005" that I can find on Google. I did see some auctions in Japan for it during the past few years, but I missed it because of many reasons. I have talked to many pencil collectors outside of China. I don't think it had been sold officially by PILOT in outside Japan, but what surprised me is that I heard some collectors from North and South America owned this pencil before. It has been a problem that not only me but also many of my friends (also pencil collectors) have the money to buy it for a really high price, but we cannot find even a single piece. Under such a situation, one of my friend suggested me to ask for help here since FPN is probably the most widespread forum in which I can find collectors who have been collecting pens or pencils for several decades. To complete my collection of Pilot Vanishing Point mechanical pencil, I will need this H-5005 eventually. But I will also need some other pencils to complete my whole collection. Here I listed some below: Sakura Free Matic ES1000A Sakura Archi Y2 Sakura AT matic ATS3000 (I have the blue barrel one, looking for a black version) Faber-Castell Alpha-matic (silver version. I have the 230th gold version, executive, titanium, bronze and the plastic versions, need a silver one) I really appreciate that if someone can help me. I've been into the hobby for 3 or so years and have amassed a moderate collection of pens. Yet, a single issue continues to bother me and I can't tell if this is just symptomatic of fountain pens in general or if I've simple been buying duds. Without fail, it seems that my pens' ink flow will weaken the more I write in a sitting, to the point that some of them even completely dry up and I have to push more ink into the feed to get it writing again. This would not be an issue if it was just one of my pens, but it seems all of my pens have this issue to some extent with the exception of a Pilot Custom 74 with an EF nib which, I assume, is simply because the air exchange works well on a pen with such a fine nib, as well as a similar Pilot Metropolitan (maybe Pilots are just exceptionally good pens). I have tried inks famed specifically for their wet-flowing properties (Private Reserve Tanzanite comes to mind) as well as adjusting adjusting feeds and nibs but the issue persists. It seems the moment I sit down for a long writing session the feed will eventually dry up and require some fiddling to get running again. This is not even an issue exclusive to my modern, plastic-feed based pens, as I had the same issues (leading to skipping rather than total drying out) in a Parker 51 with an ebonite feed and an Indian pen with an ebonite feed. Alongside this, I have had issues in both very fine pens that demand light ink flows and extremely wet, wide nibs. Similarly, I have had issues in both eyedropper and converter-filled pens, even after thoroughly washing them and even placing a ball inside to break up surface tension. It seems, regardless of what I do with my pens, air is simply either not exchanged fast enough for a constant flow or not exchanged at all. This is especially frustrating because it fills my writing sessions with dread as I simply have to anticipate and watch as the flow weakens, and it defeats the purpose of using high-capacity pens since I have to waste time fiddling with them anyways. Is there some issue with my writing style (I tend to write relatively fast, but nothing insane) or is this an issue inherent to fountain pens? Do people not write multiple pages in one sitting, as I see this issue very infrequently discussed as well?

I had a bit of a mishap yesterday; my Vanishing Point F slipped out of my hand and landed embedded in my foot. I thought I might have a tsuki-yo tattoo, but later realized the ink had actually come out but that I had bled. I wonder if it would have done less damage had it been a stub...

Hello FPN community. Recently I received my dream pen. And I have a problem: the pen doesn't want to write properly. Of course I flushed it, twice. I guess, may be the main feed channel clogged with old ink, so I need to extract the feed to clean it... It would be great to see your suggestions! -
My Pilot Custom 823 has started to leak small amounts of ink from the lower barrel and the trim ring. There appears to be a tiny hairline crack in the area. The pen has not been disassembled. The problem began after a normal flushing due to an ink change. Any way to repair this?

Below is a written review of Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-Yo. The name stands for 'Moonlight' and is a teal leaning deep blue. I quite like this pen for work related writing (little though that is); but it is a tad unsaturated in quite a few of my pen, so not quite a favorite - I'd rather it was a tad darker - the Krishna Sea at night is a similar teal leaning blue, but one with lot more sheen and leans the other way on the saturation spectrum - the color is dense! I find it works best in a wet fine nib, though for this review I used a Sailor Sapporo with a B nib, to highlight the beautiful shading.

Hello everyone. Can you help me? I have a Pilot 912 with a music nib. I am tempted to buy another with a stub nib. What is the difference between the Pilot #10 stub nib on the 912 and 742 and the #15 stub on the 743? Has anybody compared the two? I should be only too pleased to benefit from your experience.
