Battle Of The Holy Grails

Just curious about this. Who would win the battle of the HOLY GRAIL or FLAGSHIP Pens?

.) Visconti Homosapiens/Divina

.) Montblanc Meisterstuck 149

.) Pelikan M1000

.) Sailor King of Pen

.) Anything from Nakaya

Give me your take on these pens and if you have other suggestions, please chime in. Who knows, maybe one day I would have on of these (At least I hope so).

 

None of the above. I will go with calling it a flagship pen given I have no "unobtainable" pen that I want.

 

If the point is a big pen with obvious assertions of status, yet practical (or so I gather from reading the thread) then a flagship for me would be an S T Dupont Neo-classique. I'll take chinese lacquer instead of resin my precious any day. There are others which would serve equally well, like a Waterman Man 100 Patrician or Pelikan M900 Toledo although the last lacks massiveness of the others. Great pen though.

For me a grail is either something rare and uncommon such as a limited edition from Stipula, Omas and Visconti. My list would be too long if I had to enumerate all the Italian pens on my wish list I have. Aside Italian pens fondness for Meisterstück 149s and 146 from the 60's-70's and also for Japanese pens such as Danitrio and the rare limited edition of the Sailor King of Pen with a piston filler. I also collect Nettuno and added another grail, the Deus Maris from my favorite penshop Morastylos. A pen you will rarely encounter in real life because only 400 examples of it were built.

My "unobtainable" right now is the Namiki Emperor Goldfish. Haven't yet decided whether I like the new Emperor Carp pen better. These pens are so much more beautiful in the flesh than in photos, so it's hard to judge.

After nail biting and parting with some pens from my accumulation I am getting a Namiki Vermilion Emperor, an object of my desire for a long time.

What a difficult choice! I have all of those pens except a Nakaya, and they are each wonderful. For me personally, I prefer the Montblanc Meisterstuck 149 but I can't objectively say it's any better than the others. Rather, it's because it was my first "valuable" pen acquisition, purchased new in 1981 in Fort Worth, TX, at Neiman-Marcus. Mine is still like-new and I confess I have some emotional attachment to it. I have always liked the appearance, shape, and features of that old school fountain pen. Nonetheless, I don't think you can go wrong with any one or more of those outstanding pens.

 

While I own a couple of Sailor King of Pen, including the ebonite version, I would love to have one of Mr. Nagahara's specialty (multi-layered) nibs. However, since he's retired, and it's unclear that his son will produce such nibs in any significant numbers, I doubt I will ever own one. The few out there are increasingly rare and incredibly expensive.

If I had to choose from the list you provided I would say anything Nakaya. Preferably with a 1.1 stub for OB nib.
