Here's a great example of one of the few fountain pen friendly iron gall inks left on the market (RIP Montblanc Midnight Blue… ). It and R&K Salix are about even on like-o-meter, but I find myself preferring Registrar's Ink due to its darker final color. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/DZc31c.jpg

Registrar's Ink...a Rollerball Alternative?
sinisterjon posted a topic in It Writes, But It Is Not A Fountain Pen ....
Hi, Some of you may have had experience with registrar's ink, legally required in the UK for certain kinds of documents, such as marriage certificates. The usual options come from Ecclesiastical Stationery Supplies or Diamine. But both are iron gall inks and clog up pens, especially when they're used infrequently, which they are in my case. It's a bit of a faff. So, I was wondering if there are rollerballs, or indeed even gel ink pens, that are indelible like registrar's ink is. Ballpoint pens actually strike me as being indelible, but I don't know if this meets whatever the UK legal requirements are. Thanks.- 4 replies

In my quest to replace the dearly departed iron gall Montblanc Midnight Blue, I bought a bottle of Ecclesiastical Stationery Supplies Registrars’ Ink. As a usual matter, I ran Midnight Blue from my daily writer, a ‘60s (resin) 149, and never had problems with clogging or staining. I’ve tested ESSRI with dip pens, I like what it can do, and I want it to be my new Midnight Blue. However, I’m a bit concerned about clogging and staining, taking into account the normal extra maintenance recommended when dealing with iron gall ink. I must confess, ESSRI’s low price and frowzy packaging do not inspire confidence. How about it -- does anybody have successes, failures, clogs, or stains to report as a result of using ESSRI in a Montblanc piston-filler?
