Autumn Oak - Diamine

There was quite a lot of hype about this ink. I had to check it myself. To be honest I'm not really Diamine ink fan. They offer nice range of shades yet many of nice looking inks (Ancient Copper, Kelly Green, Orange, Pumpkin to name just few) can cause unpleasant and unexpected troubles (massive nib creep, clogging). Anyway I still use them but in cheaper pens. As I'm huge fan of everything that has some orange to it, I had to check Autumn Oak.

I must say I'm impressed. The ink is really nice and it behaves very well on various papers and doesn't cause any harm to the pens filled with it. Autumn Oak is awesome. That's it ladies & gentleman. Totally awesome.

Very nice ink and review!

I've seen bunch of your ink reviews and I'm curious: how large is the splatter test in real life?

That's what happened to my cheap Huahong fountain pen when I filled it with Diamine Ancient Copper. I left the pen in the drawer for about three weaks and after I uncapped it, taht's what I saw :) Ancient Copper has amazing color yet it caused nib creep in every pen I used (cheap and expensive ones).

Never heard of this color until today. Am definitely going to check it out! (Any experience with bleedthrough or feathering on cheaper papers?)

When I asked GouletPens about it last week, they had not heard of it either.

@visvamitra thanks for sharing! I totally dig Kelly green and your choice of oranges ;)

Shocking pic of Ancient Copper nib creep-no way I'd put that in my pen after seeing your photo! :yikes:

Dear visvamitra,

Thanks a million for your quick response. Have never seen such a thing in my 60 years of fountain pen experience. That Diamine ink is nasty. I will stay with Mont Blanc and Pelikan inks. Never a problem in any pen.

Best wishes,

Minty

@Minty - well, Diamine has a lot of inks, they have great inks like AUTUMN OAK that I presented in this review (it;'s great by any means: color, shading, saturation, behaviour), they have good inks , decent inks (great colors but some starting problems) and inks that should be prohibited (wonderful colors BUT terrible properties). Terrible ones are: Kelly Green, Ancient Copper (one of my favourite colors but I don't use it due to its properties), Meadow, Orange. Most of them are safe though :) I use Diamine inks, not all of them, and I find them working well. You just need to check reviews before buying one to be sure it won't cause any harm to your pen.

A friend of mine had interesting "accident". Her Diamine Syrah ink "ate" the section of her Sheaffer Prelude. I was surprised because I've never had any problems with this ink and I used ir extensively. Maybe there was some ingredient in the Prelude's section plastic that reacted with Syrah? I don't know.

That's not nib creep, that's serious nib crud. Nib creep is when the nib becomes covered in a thin film of ink that creeps from the nib slit.

Nope, that's not nib creep, that's nib crud.

Creep is a few drops of ink that just looks unsightly. That is nib crud and though allegedly it isn't damaging, it's so ugly that it must be. Thank you for the picture.

Icky pen! +1 on the garden-digging question lol!

But Autumn Oak is a beautiful color; thanks for sharing!

I was very surprised by the Diamine unlove expressed though. Diamine represents probably 80% of my ink stock and beyond easily remedied and light clogging from Ancient Copper, I've never had a problem. My various pen brands all seem to love it...great flow without being too wet, even in my juicier Visconti's.

Just wanted to mention another perspective, since swearing off the brand without trying it for yourself may prevent some nice experiences and a great range of colors. :)

@inkheart - well, I like Diamine inks, I've tried most of them. However I don't think they offer stunning quality. Their new inks Autumn Oak and Tyrian Purple are great though. So basically we can agree that I don't love them but I like them :)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
