What's your favourite Manbag?

It's gorgeous!

Are you planning to sell these, or anything else?

I'm biased, but my new favorite is this Writer's Bag my wife and I recently finished. I think it's a great size with a lot of versatility and in a lot of ways I prefer the vertical design to more conventional horizontal ones. I'm going to make myself one once we can afford it and have the time.

I had this made by a local craftsman for me. it is based off a saddleback design, combining the best of the large and thinline briefcases.

If I may ask, what did it cost you?

We made them so well, I helped him start making them and a whole line. When we get back up and running from the flood damage, we will see about putting out another run. But on average they ran about half of what a saddleback does. But they make great bags too, and bogie does great leather work too, I have a few of his items.

I reviewed his first webbie cover here on the FPN...

Thanks! We sell these through our site at www.inkleafleather.com. We also make Moleskine and Rhodia Webbie covers, card wallets, and passport wallets and we're currently working on iPad cases, padfolios, pen cases and Field Notes/ Moleskine Cahier covers.

I'm using this one right now:

5.11 Tactical PUSH bag

It's very good for what it is, and I'll be using it when I get back to Canada, too. A lot more convenient than a backpack when you don't have a lot of stuff to carry around, and better than filling all my cargo pockets. Pretty durable so far, and the velcro strips and patches let you add some personal flair if you're so inclined.

I recently purchased a Bellino "The Reporter"

It has pen clips and other holders in the front a large flapped opening (it comes with a padded laptop carrier for a smaller laptop) and behind that it has a zipped compartment with 2 divided sections in it.

The pen holders are big enough for my fountain pens (maybe not a mammoth cigar size). I use the large flapped compartment to hold my active work materials and the zipped part to hold support stuff that gets used sometimes (including other notebooks, folders, my ereader)

Its a nice design and not too overly expensive.

It's even better in person. It is magnificent...and perfect for its designed purpose.

I just received a Rickshaw Commuter, and love it. My job has evolved to me traveling around the world, so weight became a priority. Thus, my Vagabond (Saddleback lookalike) was way to heavy for me on my last trip to Europe, even though I swapped my 15" HP notebook for an 11" MacAir, to reduce weight.

I considered getting the Rickshaw Commuter, too, but I went with the Timbuk2 bag (I think of the same name). Build quality is great on the bag, although the grab strap was poorly sewn in and pulled out of the bag after a year of use. I'm sure they'd sew in a new one, but I don't want to bother with sending it in. The big selling point for the Timbuk2 bag, for me, was the TSA friendly laptop compartment, allowing me to go through security without taking my laptop out of the bag.

Overall, though, I like Rickshaw's line more and their quality is AWESOME.

Steve. Just plain ol' Steve.

Send back the Timbuk2 I believe they're guaranteed for life. I'm sure they'd fix it free.

  • 4 weeks later...

Since it seems like most of the people here on FPN use leather bags and whatnot, I was wondering if anyone can tell me how heavy (or light) leather is? I love the look and feel of leather so I'm curious to whether I should get a leather laptop/messenger bag for college. I'm around 4"9 by the way. :3

Leather is significantly heavier than a synthetic like cordura nylon. And, if you find a leather bag that isn't significantly heavier than nylon, then leave it.

The leather on my Gfeller bag is vegetable tanned oak (one of the best money can buy, made by the Hermann oak leather tanneries in the US) and although it is heavier then cordura, it isn't much. Chrome tanned leathers are heavier, but veg tanned ones aren't that much heavier

That bag my wife and I made above is about 3.5 pounds. Not bad for a bag of it's size really. Like Gfeller, it's Hermann Oak veg tan. Ours is 5 oz. I know people have gotten upset about me saying it before, but if you want to avoid heft, avoid a bag with lots of extra d-rings. A handful of those is really pretty heavy.

I have a couple of briefcases, a dark brown leather, a gift from my wife about 25 years ago, an oak briefcase, traded for on FPN. When I went back to college in my early 30s, my wife wouldn't allow me to carry a briefcase, haha, so she bought me a glove leather backpack. Now I carry one of two Murrano cases, one large in tan leather, the other black canvas and tan leather. I like the browns. My younger daughter works at Fossil (and goes to college) has a few "deep discount" vouchers that shee needs to spend so I'm looking at a transit organizer for "possibles" aka Daniel Boone's possible bag. http://www.fossil.com/en_US/shop/men/accessories/novelty/transit_organizer_panel-ml8278p.html?

Manbag? Hmmn I have a Rapha Musette (shoulder, satchel bag) which can hold my B6 notebook, a semi-B5 Pilot-brand stationery, pen case(s), some ink in small Nalgene bottles, several rolls of film and my M6 (if need be). Not very heavy until I put in the M6 inside. And it comes with a high visibility hot pink rain cover ;-)

All the best,

Rommel

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
