For quite a while I was using a BBP Hampton's http://www.bbpbags.com/hamptons.html briefcase / messenger bag / backpack bag. Not only was the material waterproof (resistant), but the zippered compartment lined and made for a laptop used a waterproof zipper --- from sad experience, I can tell you that all the waterproof material doesn't mean a thing unless the zipper is waterproof too! I was walking around Tokyo in the rain with another bag over my shoulder... it was waterproof, but the rain just went happily through the zipper destroying the paperwork inside.

I then went to a local luggage shop (supposedly discount) and spent time hunting for an ideal bag. Of all things, the one that I liked the most (and bought and used and used and used) was sold by Rick Steves (he does travel shows on TV here in the US). http://travelstore.ricksteves.com/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=product&theParentId=8&id=217 Veloce bag is GREAT! Lightweight, crossbody or over the shoulder, lots of pockets in the right places, etc.

As above mentioned I recently purchased a Red Rock Rambler sling bag. I have been using it for several days now during a trip I am on. If you are into sling bags, this one is worth a very serious look. It carries a lot or a little comfortably, including room for a laptop. The video shows how easy it is to bring the bag to a front position, which is convenient when more security is needed or while seated etc. It is very well constructed, extremely rugged, and has the ability to attach other Molle units. Fortunately I was able to handle the bag before purchase. Having a bad back I found this bag is by far the best I've found for even weight distribution.

Standard Disclaimer

Based on your review I got one of the Red Rock Rambler bags...I have been using it for several days and it is GREAT! I have never had a bag like this that felt so comfortable. It holds tons of stuff and the way it swings around to allow you to access stuff while still wearing it is fantastic. Lots of compartments, lightweight and holds my iPad comfortably (size wise). This is a real user friendly bag with good capacity for an EDC bag that is comfortable to carry. A winner and I found it (in Olive Drab) online for $39.95 at Deal Sergeant

"ooo la la" is the word that comes to mind. Which pen case is in the pic? Also, is that a Gfeller cover you personalized?

Colonel Littleton Saddlebag briefcase -

Best bag I've ever had. Everyday life is adding to the patina of this beautiful piece of leather, whether it is coffee stained, water stained, baby drool...strong yet light beautiful milled leather. Opens/closes simply and just works for me. Considered Saddleback leather, but I've never looked back by not going with their product.

My photos make the leather appear reddish, it is not, it is a beautiful tanned brown leather.

Wonderful company to work with out of Tennessee. I also use their #9 Journal and their paper, excellent with a fountain pen. I travel a lot and I'm able to carry what I need to be efficient. I have a Macbook Air, but the space for the laptop will easily fit a larger computer. Commuting back & forth to the office I don't concern myself with heat, rain, snow, etc. because it is all adding character to the bag. I enjoy carrying this bag so much that I take it with me to meetings allowing me to take journal, laptop and/or iPad. Their leather is simply beautiful and the craftsmanship is second to none.

I have several messenger bags and a backpack from Timbuk2. My favourite amongst them is a small one I customized in black waxed canvas with a nice bright orange rubberized insides and a bright emerald green Timuk2 logo on the outside. It's waterproof, and just the right size for a notebook, pens, and whatever I'm reading at the time.

I also have a small leather bag my partner got me whilst working an internship in Russia, which is beautiful and I love it. But it's smaller and so doesn't fit as much stuff as I ordinarily want with me.

I have only one bag right now, but it is one that I absolutely love. The Hudson messenger bag by Ernest Alexander. It's a heavy waxed canvas bag with a timeless look that has plenty of pockets and a divided main compartment, suitable for carrying a laptop plus extra documents/folders/miscellaneous goods. A very sturdy and high-quality bag made by a small company in the USA.

Don't recall what the model is called - but I got it from Eddie Bauer - in a brick and mortar location about 10 years ago. Don't believe they have make/sell this anymore. Zippered pocket on the back and in the flap over the top. A smaller zippered pocket 3-4 pen slots, a pocket the perfect size for a HP12C calculator and another on the other side about the same size only mesh and zippered. A large enough pocket that I can put a large (2" ring) Franklin binder in it with room left over (classic size) And a couple of file pockets.

Today I had in it, said Franklin planner, 2 bottles of ink, 26 oz stainless steel water bottle, A4 Black n' Red notebook and a couple of other things(Peter F Drucker's The Effective Executive in paperback) and couple of smaller items in main large zippered pocket, some file folders in the file pockets, said HP12C a few miscellaneous pens (ballpoint, highlighter, at least one gel and room for one or two FP's) I think I even have a few cartridges in one of the pockets. (it can get pretty heavy) But it is a solid nylon (rip stop I think) and barely shows any wear - and daily - min 5 days per week use.

I've done lots of switching around trying to find one I really like and, of course, my tastes and needs change. I recently found this on sale at AAA

My usual everyday favorites:

- Piquadro(Spanish) satchel for business purposes: elegant, with many convenient pockets inside. [$400]

- An awesome leather bag by The Saddleback Leather company - looks heavy duty but I just love it [$600]

- On holidays, I will favor the 5.11 messenger bag for all the compartments inside, or its cousin by Tasmanian Tiger (German brand) [$100]

I've been meaning to show this off for awhile (finished it in early October), but this is the last bag my wife and I designed and made. It's my new favorite. We made it of vegetable tanned leather and it's completely hand stitched. Inside there's two flat pockets lined with pig skin, suitable for papers or thin laptops or tablets and an open pocket in the center with pockets and pen loops along the rear wall. We're calling it the Inkling Writer's Bag (I'm a bit worn on the notion of briefcases when so few of us have any "briefs" of which to speak). There's more details on our site if you're curious:

As a thrilled owner of one of your bags (referenced earlier in this thread!) in my opinion whoever gets this will be getting one very nice bag indeed!

Is was actually made for a friend of ours who's a middle school English teacher. He's fond of Hobbits and all things Tolkien, so we used a circular lock to make it a bit reminiscent of a Hobbit hole. I figure one of the pen loops could quite easily be repurposed to hold a straight stem pipe.

While maybe not technically a "manbag" I use an L.L. Bean messenger bag. (http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/75419?feat=845-GN1&page=bean-s-messenger-bag) It is big enough for m laptop, a couple padfolios and various other items I need throughout the day. This one is going on 7 years and nearing the end of its life, although to be fair this is after VERY heavy use through high school and college in pretty unfriendly environments.

I plug things in, I push buttons, and I pick things up and put them down in different places. And when I have a chance I write things down!

I have a closet full of bags that I buy, use for 6 months and then decide isn't quite right for one reason or other. I am circling back to a CaseLogic army green artist messenger bag I bought about 4 years ago. Not my favorite but very casual and durable. Problem is the inner compartment doesn't have individual pen loops, just a large mesh zipper pocket. Everything just lumps together between pens, phones, etc. Don't see it as an ongoing solution but working for trips to Starbucks right now.

Not all who wander are lost.

And what's with that great distressed-looking notebook? Is that just a cover, or the notebook itself?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
