Request for Help to save older images from early FPN reviews

Project restarted.

@Sandy1was one of our early members and her contributions were outstanding.  Here was a thread about 10 blue inks, all inks that are available and loved today.

Unfortunately, during our transition to the new platform and Photobucket's transformation, we have lost many of the images that were linked in the original reviews. I know that I have already spent hours updating some of my old threads - like the color threads in my signature line.  Today I spent an hour and I was able to resurrect the thread above.  I know that only a moderator can edit the messages, but any of you can copy the links into a new browser and save the images here on FPN.  Then, @lapis and I can update the posts.

So, here is what has happened.

The images are listed like this:

Waterman Florida Blue : from the 51, on the HPJ1124.

http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/Sandy1-1/FPN Stuff - 2011/One Of The Ten OOTT Summary and Picks/4e6d3fa0.jpg. Because part of the URL is missing, the link does not work.  If you copy the entire link http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/Sandy1-1/FPN Stuff - 2011/One Of The Ten OOTT Summary and Picks/4e6d3fa0.jpg into a new tab you can then see the image. Right click on the image and choose "save image as" - be sure to save the image with a name that makes sense.

Then, respond to the post and attach the image.  Please explain which image is attached - for example, I photo described as "Waterman Florida Blue : from the 51, on the HPJ1124"  I named WFB 51 HPJ1124 and included the description "Waterman Florida Blue : from the 51, on the HPJ1124" in the post.  You only need to respond to the thread and drop the image into the bottom of your post to attach a file.

Then upload the image to the Sandy1 album.  When it gets full, I'll make another album.

Then create a new post in the original thread, and add the photo to a new post.

Thank you all for your help.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Erm, but whoever does this uses up their attachment allotment and/or their gallery allotment.  (Seems only fair to point that out.)

Another option is to add the "s" after http, so that it becomes https... Here's an example:

https://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/Sandy1-1/FPN Stuff - 2011/One Of The Ten OOTT Summary and Picks/4e6d3fa0.jpg

...and paste that into the editor window and let the window convert it to an image, like this:

4e6d3fa0.jpg

Of course, it's still on photobucket, but with the "https" link, the image can be seen.

Equally "of course" is that if anyone out there removes or disable's Sandy's photobucket account, those links will also break, so uploading them to FPN is the best option.

If you just do the "s" - when Sandy's photo bucket goes down, we will still lose the pictures. If you instead download them and upload them via the attachment, I can easily move the attachments to one of the FPN unlimited galleries.  @A Smug Dill may have an easier way for us to do this so I'm looping him in.  You may have to remove your attachments after I copy them over to free up your space.

Oh, and it's not just the "s", I have to fix the link because it does not reference the "http://i783." and you will also notice that your copy has the photobucket background, which the uploaded photos do not.  large.239296207_WFB51HPJ1124.jpg.a58381b6e7e7b016f3c03fe1a745b4c8.jpg

Actually, we don't have rights to remove either attachments or gallery content, so we'll need the mod to do that for us too, but as long as you're planning to do that, then there's no reason for us not to help.  If someone has rights to Sandy's photobucket and is willing to contact me privately, I could probably automate the downloading, possibly with file naming, and then we could put them all in a "Sandy" gallery and just connect them to the posts...

Anywho, I shall ponder a way to simplify this, but in the meantime, no reason for folks not to get started.

In order to ensure people don't waste more time than necessary, I have the following proposals:

  1. @amberleadavis, could you make a gallery in advance, and set it as one to which we all (or perhaps named volunteers, if you can do that) can add images?  Then those of us who choose to download and upload images can do so directly into that gallery, and you mods won't have to move the images.
  2. I suggest that anyone willing to help post a link here to whichever of Sandy's topic they want to work on, then we don't duplicate effort.  Post the link before you start, and check here to ensure no one is already working on that one.

@LizEF  Let me confirm here with you, if you can't delete, then how does it use your space? I thought the space limitation was on the prior server. Can you check this for me, I know that my posted available usage has not changed since we moved to the new server. I don't know if this is because I am a moderator.  Please let me know what you see.

Can you check this for me, I know that my posted available usage has not changed since we moved to the new server. I don't know if this is because I am a moderator.  Please let me know what you see.

We mortals have a limited amount of space allowed for "attachments" - the thing where you drag and drop at the bottom of the post window: 48.83 MB is all - that's pretty small.  When we go to look at our "attachments", there is no option to delete, edit or anything else.  So, if I upload one of Sandy's images into my attachments, it uses up a portion of my 48.83 MB.  Now, if you move the file out of my attachments to some other location, then I assume it makes some of my space available again.

Similarly, I'm allowed 50 galleries with 100 images per gallery.  If I make a gallery and put 100 of Sandy's images into it, that's 1 fewer gallery I can use for my own purposes.  Again, if a mod / admin moves the images out, then I recover my gallery, but there are two problems unique to galleries:

  1. You're only allowed to edit it for so long, so if I create one now, use it for Sandy's images, then it takes 6 months to move all those images out, I may lose the ability to edit my gallery.  (The good news in this particular use case is that, as I understand it, uploading an image into the gallery would allow me to edit it - though I'm not sure if it would allow me to edit the title or only the description.)
  2. More important, by far, is that if you move an image - out of my attachments, or out of my gallery, it would break the link that I put into Sandy's thread!!  Now we'd have more broken links before regaining the images in her threads.

Given the above, it just seems far easier for everyone (less redundant work) if an FPN gallery (or as many as needed) could be made ahead of time, and volunteers put Sandy's images into that gallery, then link them from there into the new thread.  The no one has to lose their own space and no one has to move any images.  We just need volunteers to fetch the images.

I figured it was a longshot, but had to check as it would speed everything dramatically. :)   (Of course, so would giving me access to the database (even just SELECT access), but I don't think Wim will go for that... :D

(With SELECT access to the database, I could query out all her photobucket URLs, along with the thread to which they belong, then use regular expression to write some sort of fetch command for all of them, and automate most of the process...)

I don't see a way to make my Sandy1 gallery available and I don't see a way to create an unlimited gallery for everyone to use.  So, should I create a dropbox account?  I'll also post this to the admin's and ask for help.

I figured it out. I was able to change the album so anyone can add to it.

You're a lawyer and I'm not, so for the purpose of this discussion, I'll just omit questions concerning intellectual property rights, and issues arising from (potential breach of) Photobucket's terms of service with which , etc. and only address the technical aspects.

Theoretically, someone could write a quick-and-dirty script, in a language such as Perl or AWK that makes extensive use of regular expressions, to parse @Sandy1's posts in threads she started, to extract all the Photobucket URLs, and create a table containing information along the lines of:

(Column A) https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/179174-diamine-imperial-blue/?do=findComment&comment=1801602

(Column B) thread-179174-comment-1801602-figure-1.jpg

(Column C) https://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/Sandy1-1/InkyThoughts2010/INK576-1.jpg

A script can then use the wget command (in Linux, or if the package is installed, OS X, or cygwin on Windows, etc.) can then be used to retrieve each image file from Photobucket's server and place it into local storage.

Then, an FPN user can upload up to 100 images at a time into an Image Gallery album, using those filenames in Column B; that should provide enough of a context/reference to tell someone which image should go where.

As long as consecutive retrievals are sufficiently spaced out by random wait time, it should not trigger defence mechanisms against denial of service, although one's IP address may still end up being blacklisted by the host/server.

I have not figured out what is causing Photobucket's image server to inject watermarks. It's not (just) HTTP vs HTTPS; and it's not (just) whether “i783.” in included in the URL. The same URL, https://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/Sandy1-1/InkyThoughts2010/INK576-1.jpg (with or without the ‘s’ at the end of “http”), will bring up an image without the Photobucket watermark, in a browser tab. Retrieving it using the wget command results in an image with the watermark. I've quickly tried putting in a ‑‑referer option (although it wouldn't make sense to require one, given what was observed by just pasting the URL into the address bar in a new browser tab) and a  ‑‑user-agent option in the command, but that hasn't fooled Photobucket's server. Someone will need to figure out which parameters will trigger the watermark (or, rather, which will avoid it).

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

No, no dropbox.  Two options:

  1. Even I can create a gallery to which everyone can add images - it's just a setting / option when creating / editing a gallery - it's a checkbox.  If there's a generic account for moderators to use for this kind of thing, then that's the place to put it.  But perhaps only Wim can do this.
  2. If you have sufficient rights, you could just change Sandy1's password (and/or email address on the account), log in as Sandy1 and create a few galleries for this purpose - that seems like the best way.

@LizEF would you please give it a try.

Give what a try?  Creating a gallery to which everyone can add images?  I already know how to do it, my hesitations are as mentioned previously:

  1. Losing some (one won't be enough) of my 50 galleries (which I expect to use eventually for EFNIRs)
  2. If we start out using my galleries, and you later move the images from my gallery to another, you'll break any and all links people created to said images
  3. That move would be wasted effort - better to take the time upfront to figure out a good way to create a gallery that doesn't have to be changed and from which images don't have to be removed.

Note that folks can start downloading images now (and "claiming" Sandy's threads here as previously suggested) and just wait a few hours or a day or two) to upload them once we get the target galleries created here.

Try uploading into Amber's now-public gallery.

Oh.  Well, I'll need to go get one of Sandy's images.   [---nope, new problem-----]
