Found this advertised on Fleabay for $4,500 USD. Several offers declined already.
Is this reasonable asking price for it? It comes with M nib. I am more interested in an OBB nib

which is even harder to find on

a L139. Thoughts?

Nib lost its plating; also I‘d prefer less faded stripes for this price.

Hard to put a price tag on a 139 these days without actually holding it in your hands.

A perfect one could catch c. 3000 Euro today but I‘d also buy a less perfect one for much less.

If you really like an OBB nib you better wait for one.

Cheers

Michael

Yes, scarce and therefore can command high prices.

As with anything in short supply and high demand, prices are subjective.

Personally, I think it's overpriced - but, of course, sellers can ask what they want for these pens. Whether any buyers bite is another question. If it's not exactly the spec and condition you're looking for, I'd steer clear and (as Michael R states) wait for another.

It could be a long wait, but that may be better than an expensive mistake.

Good luck.

With the current trend at Montblanc to re-imagine old heritage I wouldn't be surprised if they do something based around this model soon. Hopefully it won't cost $4500

There is another 139 on eBay with short window and OBBB (did they really produce those??) from the UK, with a price tag of £3.750 (about USD 5000). See here https://www.ebay.de/itm/Rare-Vintage-1940s-Montblanc-Masterpiece-L139-Fountain-Pen-14C-OB-OBBB-Flex-Nib/224270973857?hash=item3437977ba1:g:m~cAAOSwOkRfvEGz

That looks in much nicer condition - again, I'm surprised at the price, but perhaps that's the ballpark for these pens, now.

Yes, the OBBB title is misleading, but in the description it is described as an OB nib which will flex to BBB.

Thanks. This one is nice but I much prefer one with long window.

Question on Montblanc L139 long window pen vs. the short window pen:

1) Which one is more rare? I suspect it is the long window pen that is more rare.

2) Which one is worth more and will appreciate more?

I suspect from a writing perspective, it doesn't matter much whether it is long or short window, it is mostly dependent on the

nib that is on the pen.

This one is overpriced in my opinion. This is based on the fact that the most trusted of sellers will get you one in better condition for less. Personally, I find the 139 overpriced in general. It’s not really scarce in comparison to other vintage models that are cheaper but rarer. I mean you could have a beautiful Compressor for that price, or a lovely gold or solver safety filler, or a nice large first series Meisterstück, etc. for 4.5k. In fact the 139 is not so hard to find compared to the pens I just mentioned. The 139 is expensive because it’s achieved legendary status I feel. I understand that in terms of design it is actually near-perfect, but I have never managed to justify buying one for my collection when I could instead buy rarer and more special pens for the same price or less. So instead, I am happy with my long window 136 and 149 silver rings - I have all the 139 features covered between them :)

I am still looking for a Montblac L139 with long window and a flexible OBB nib.

I know it is very hard to find and surely be expensive.

I know that they're not exactly current, but don't the Hemingway and Dumas replicate the overall size/dimensions of the 139 albeit with then-current 149 internals? Granted I don't know whether a Hemingway or a 139 is less expensive these days.

If MB would make a 139 recreation that retailed similarly to the current LEs or special edition 149s like the Calligraphy, I could probably be persuaded to buy one. I'd THINK that price point(say $1000-1100 USD) wouldn't exactly be a money-losing proposition for MB, but then some of their other current pricing can be incomprehensible. Of course the other side of that would be how well it would sell, and I don't know whether it would be better or worse than the 149 Calligraphy.

I could be wrong, but I had the impression (from images only admitedly) that the old 139's were a tiny bit slimmer than the 149's and in comparison to the Hemjngway and Dumas and the cap on the 139 looks a lot longer.

Generally speaking, yes.  There are dimensional differences but the aesthetic is similar, of course.

Hard times don't last, but hard people do.

Thank a Veteran.

This Montblanc L139 pen with short window and OB nib flexible to OBBB has been advertised for many months now and yet no taker yet.

I wonder why? It seems to be well maintained and has a desirable nib. Is it the price? Not even an offer shown or declined.

Is the seller not tired of paying advertising fee to eBay?

There seems to be no comparable offerings out there for sale. Are everybody waiting for a long window pen?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
