Independent Fountain Pen Manufacturers

Dear Community,

I am calling to your knowledge to ask if you could provide a list of independent fountain pen manufacturers that sell their products online (or at least, have a website promoting their fountain pens).

I was looking for a new fountain pen and thought of independent manufacturers instead of big trademarks.

Would you mind sharing information about them?

Instead of me providing any preference on fountain pen specifications like materials, nib size, etc to narrow my choices, I would glady prefer that this topic turns into a source of information for those who seek an independent manufacturer too.

Thanks!

Find the thread on pen makers in the Writing Instruments category. That includes a lot of one man shops.

I'm not sure what ypu mean by "independent" manufacturers. With a few exceptions the large pen companies manufacture their own pens.

It quite depends on your definition of independent. Small pen makers normally just use Bock/Jowo nib units, making them not entirely independent. Those who make their own nibs are fairly large/well-known (Aurora, Pilot, Platinum, Sailor......). You might be able to find a couple of Chinese/Indian pen makers who are both small (again, in which sense? In terms of number of pens sold or money earned?) and make their own nibs but I don't have one in mind right now.

You are both right. I believe I was ambiguous in my description. What I mean by "independent fountain pen makers" is that they create something apart from the big trademarks, like Auorora, Faber Castell, Lamy, etc.

They may use Schmidt, Bock, JOWO nibs etc, but create something apart and may I say, in a much shorter scale than the latter trademarks; for instance, Edison, Benu Fountain Pens, Ranga, ASA Pens, Fountain Pen Revolution, Italix Pens from Mr Ford, etc. I hope these examples make my request more precise and clear.

I second Zaddick's suggestion. I think you will be pleased by the variety.

Ranga pens are also made in a small shop in India. Peyton Street Pens sells them here in the U.S.

A second to Shawn Newton. Buying a bespoke pen from him is an adventure (a pleasant adventure).

You might also check around at local craft events, flea markets, and the like. I have seen some very nice pens made by hobbyists who turn up at these places.

Edit to add that pen turners have their own forum under the Creative Expressions category.

I just heard about this Spanish pen company that makes their own nibs (I believe)

My rule for "independent" would include in-house nibs. Just making the body doesn't count.

then you have to define when a trademark is "big".

I consider for example Aurora an independent company.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
