Waterproofness Test Of Several Ballpoint And Gel Refills

Recommended Posts

I've posted this on another forum, but I think you all would be interested in it as well.

This is a test of how waterproof certain ballpoint and gel inks are (also included are two fountain pen inks at the bottom).

I've categorized them as follows:

Waterproof:

  • Uniball Signo
  • Pilot Juice
  • Bic Cristal
  • Rite in the Rain (Fisher Space fine)

Semi-waterproof:

  • Pilot G2
  • Schmidt easyFlow
  • Fisher Space
  • Pilot Precise

Not waterproof:

  • Parker Quink Gel

Really surprised that the Bic Cristal holds up so well

Thanks Brigantian. That's a useful test. It's funny how badly the Parker gel does, which saves me wondering whether to try one in my Jotter (I'm deciding between Quinkflow and Schmidt easyFLOW at the moment).

I've been a huge fan of the Pilot G-2 for years, but the Signo is in the hunt for taking over the mantle as my favourite ball pen.

Thank you for the comparisons. It's interesting to see how the same brand of refill behaves differently in different tip widths.

It is somewhat ironic that many Bic pens do conform to ISO 12757-2, the archival quality part of the standard.

Parker QuinkFlows should still be archival quality too.

Kaweco Supra (titanium B), Al-Sport (steel BB).

Parker: Sonnet (dimonite); Frontier GT; 51 (gray); Vacumatic (amber).

Pelikan: m600 (BB); Rotring ArtPen (1,9mm); Rotring Rive; Cult Pens Mini (the original silver version), Waterman Carene (ultramarine F)

The Parker Blue Gel is even worst than the black...your writing will disappear with the slightest water. I have put writing in the washing machine written with Easyflow ink and its still readable.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
