Gold Italic

I recently bought this Omas ogiva - beautiful pen. It seems that the nib was customised to write as and italic from the original nib marking (medium). The customisation looks like it was made by grinding or clipping the top of the nib off including the tipping which means that when I use this to write I will be writing directly with the gold part onto the surface of the paper. Given how soft these nibs are, I am not quite comfortable with that.

 

So before I go spending 100s of Euros/Pounds on getting this one retipped and reground to an italic or cursive italic does anyone have any thoughts?

 

EDIT:

Another option might be to just get a replacement nib, so if anyone has any suggestions along those lines please let me know.

Yup, looks like a home done job. Too bad. But even though gold is softer than the the tipping the damage is done. If you like how it writes just use it. When it gets really bad then worry about repair or replace.

Nope, it's NOT a home job. This was OMAS's way of making italics towards the end of their production cycle. I have at least 2-3 pens with this mod and it comes this way from the factory. It's their stubs that have tipping.

I've put a lot of miles on one with no apparent wear.

 

I believe there must be some kind of tipping or hardening on these due to my anecdotal observations:

I have untipped steel italics and I have untipped gold italics (the most soft and indulgent feeling nib ever)

The late production Omas italic feels somewhere in between. Definitely not as soft feeling as untipped gold, but softer than Bock stainless. I have an untipped Omas Titanium italic that feels about the same.
