Montblanc Rollerball Refill

Does any one know if the MontBlanc Legrand Rollerball will take the standard Montblanc rollerball refill? Or if the Legrand refill can be "hacked" and made to use bottled ink?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, it is easy to refill the rollerball. Using regular size pliers (small ones will do damage to the plastic top) grip the plastic top and slowly rock it back and forth until it pops off. When removed once, it will be easier to remove for subsequent fillings. Using a dropper saturate the inside sponge with the same colour ink(Royal Blue -> Royal Blue, etc) that was in the refill (about 1ml... depending on how dry the refill is). Any excess will drip out of the breather hole near the tip so do this on an appropriate surface or over a sink. Push on the plastic top and let the sponge saturate with the ink for a couple of hours. Doing it before bed is a good idea. In the morning wipe off any excess ink from the tip and you are good to go.

Has anyone had success completely changing the ink color? I have a legrand refill that I took the sponge out and rinsed out. I let it dry and added MB Defoe Green. The issue I am having is that when I write with the refill it is much much drier than the original ink. On some paper that is very absorbent it looks OK but is still much lighter than when I use a fountain pen. On slick paper like Rhoda is struggles to put any ink down at all. The sponge is dripping wet. The only think I can think of is that the ink consistency is too thin for the refill housing. Any thoughts or experiences?

Maybe it just takes time. I refilled mine with American Eel blue and didn't like the skippy results. So the pen just say around unused.

 

After some considerable time, it now works great.

 

I never wash my refill cartridges. I just load 'em with the new ink on top of the old ink. But I just use different blues.

 

Since I only use roller balls as scribble pens or loaners, I'm not persnickety about the color. Most blues are pleasing to me.

The Montblanc LeGrand RB won't use the smaller refill that fits the Classic sized RB.

Fantastic. I almost threw it away. I tested it out after about 3 days and now it works like a charm. I can now tell the difference between fountain pen and rollerball pen ink now as the roller ink is much thicker and darker. The medium Rollerball lays down about 1/2 - 3/4 of the ink that a medium fountain nib puts on paper so the ink is noticeably lighter, but sill looks great!

Interesting. I might try evaporating water from some ink to see what happens.
