Sailor Do-You Ink Review (Handwritten)

Based on some recent discussion regarding Sailor Do-you and Iroshizuku Take-sumi (both of which I happen to have recently purchased), I filled my Edison Beaumont pneumatic with Sailor Do-you. I was not disappointed. This is a wonderful ink. If you like wet inks I feel confident that you will like this ink as well, assuming you like this kind of color, which I very much do.

Thank you. I know a lot of people like saturated/bright inks, but as you say Tas, this one is a subtle gem.

The more I see this ink, the more I am compelled to pick up a bottle It looks like a slightly greyer/less-red version of Diamine Chocolate Brown. Does anyone have both to compare?

I know this will sound stupid... but it just looks Black to me. What color is supposed to be?

Not sure what the intention was, but it washes to sepia so we can assume it's a very dark brown.

Sorry that the iPhone is not giving a very good picture, especially capturing the color. I tried taking a close-up and still it gave too much light-dark contrast.

 

Yes the color can appear "black" as it is a dark color, especially at a distance, and you could probably use this at work, with a medium or fine nib the uninitiated might not even think twice about the color. Looking closely, it wouldn't be mistaken for black. And next to black it's easy to see it's not black. I'll try to do some comparisons, but I may not get to that today. Hopefully tomorrow.

Thanks White... can you do some swabs... this and black.

 

Swabs are mainly good to show the hue of an ink... they are no good representation of the ink color when you write thou.

I did some searching on the forum, and there was quite a bit of discussion regarding the value (or not) of swabs. I personally what to see more of what an ink will look like when I write with it, so I've found swabs less than useful. Be that as it may, my attempt at making a swab showed nothing really interesting about the color. Here is a link to the swab at Anderson Pens

And if I was looking at the swab there I wouldn't have bought the color. I would have said "just a black". Though I personally like black.

 

So I did the drop a drop onto a damp paper towel trick. Now you can see the lovely brown with the hint of green. It's compared with Sailor's Kiwa guro pigmented black.

Thank you for a lovely review of my favorite underrated, "subtle gem", can't tell how dark the brown is, could fall into it while daydreaming ink.

How does it compare to Take-sumi?

The simple answer is Take-sumi is a black ink. This one is brown/ebony.

It's the wettest and most lubricated ink in my collection. It removes stains. On of my favourite inks even though I'm not really fond of the colour.

Bought it to go with a Sailor pen. At first, I was disappointed and thought I should have chosen another one (I love the greens of the four seasons inks), but since I've seen it under different lights, I am amazed by the ink. Sailor produces very subtle inks, and they are a joy to discover and look at them.
