Charcoal Grey Ink?

Im keen to get grey ink, in an 'almost black' shade.....the only greys I have seen so far are very light coloured. If anyone knows of anything charcoalish in colour, available in the UK, I'd be very grateful

You'll have to order it from Japan, but boy, is the effort worth it! My review would be highly similar to the one above, save the sheen, which I cannot detect.

If you want a very dark grey, you might want to check out some of the less saturated black inks. Sheaffer Black and Sailor Jentle Black both lean towards grey, as can J. Herbin Perle Noire if used in a dry pen. Noodler's Dark Matter would also fit the bill, but I don't know how easily you can get it in the UK.

Just doodled with the Kobe Nagasawa ink in a wet pen. It doesn't look like a washed out or thinned out black, but a charcoal with plenty of depth. I didn't think grey could have so much punch.

Diamine Graphite has some green in it. Especially on some paper/pen combos it is almost moss green. I wouldn't recommend it.

 

Iroshizuku Take Sumi may fit your needs, Or J.Herbin Cacao Du Brasil comes to my mind.

 

Edit: Oh, I forgot to add that Take Sumi means Bamboo Charcoal. :)

You might like Platinum black then. I got a cartridge of this ink along with a pen I bought on ebay and popped it into the pen to try it out not half an hour ago.

Charcoal grey might be a good description of it actually (going to have another look in daylight tomorrow), I hadn't seen any review of it before I tried it out so I was rather shocked at it being called black and had to do a search to see if it was supposed to be this light. It's kind of nice, just not what I had expected. Dries fast, and according to the review it's waterproof.

Not sure exactly how "black" and/or "dark" your grey has to be, but check out CdA (old) Carbon, CdA (new) Infinite Grey, Diamine Graphite, Diamine Grey, GvFC Stone Grey, Iroshi kiri-same, MB Einstein, N's Dark Matter, Organics Studio Arsenic, R&K Leipziger Schwarz, Sailor Kobe #31 = Stone Grey, Standardgraph Anthracite.

De Atramentis Fog Grey is my current favorite grey. Like you, I wanted to find one that wasn't too light. I've tried it in a variety of pens; in some it isn't great, but in most it is gorgeous.

 

Love me my Edison and Newton pens and I share some Visconti, Omas, and Nakaya love, too. Oh, and a certain Waterman Music nib I might just have.

Akkerman ink #29 is a killer grey, but it is a) only available via import and B) quite pricey. But it is AMAZING.

I'm also very fond of Diamine Graphite.

Thanks for the topic.

I want a dark - almost black ink but not totally black. I use Diamine Graphite for some time now and I am almost happy but not totally (and will I ever be?). I like the colour and the texture on most papers but I don't like the greenish hue.

 

The best dark ink for me is the Diamine Registrar's (starts its life on the paper as blue, becomes dark blue a few minutes later and dark grey/black or blue/black a few weeks later). However it is a very difficult ink to use as it can dry easily, stains the pens and it is not consistent.

 

So: Diamine Graphite for me for now - will try the other colours mentioned in this topic.

Ooh, it looks like Diamond grey is almost Akkerman in color. Can you confirm, AllenG?

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
