So, Lisa... if you absolutely, positively, under pain of death had to choose one of your children as your favourite... ? :ninja:

Too many pens; too little writing.

Help yourself, quinden. I've been hacking my pen cases like that (with an emphasis on hack -- as opposed to finesse) for a long time.

autopsy, I imagine the look on your face is very similar to Ward's (of Atelier Gargoyle) when I showed him my Hemingway. He couldn't believe I'd take it out of my home. Don't be too alarmed: I don't expect to carry this many pens (of any brand). I hacked this case in preparation for the SF Pen Show, so that I can keep my pens literally on me. I expect to be very mobile when I'm not assisting at nibs.com's table.

Tiffany, I'll be working alongside John and Jonella this weekend - *excited!* Thanks for mentioning that John posts his Naka-ai. Hm, very interesting. Enjoy yours when it arrives!

Thanks, Brian K. The Decapod is actually a Mini Decapod. It's the littlest of my Nakayas. So cute! Looks like an after-dinner mint. No, more like a chocolate-mint you can stir your coffee with. DEElicious!

We balance each other out, christof. :-) (Or, should I say, Detective Callahan?)

Mongrelnomad, okay, first, I have to say, I don't think of any of my pens as my, ah, children. I just... can't. And if someone said, "Pick one of your pens to keep; I'm going to destroy the rest NOW!" If I couldn't poke his eyes out with my Knuckles of Doom, then I'd say, "DESTROY THEM ALL! THEY ARE NOT THE MASTER OF ME!"

OR...

I'd pick the Desk Pen.

:-)

That is a phenomenally gorgeous group of pens!

How do you carry your Desk Pen around?

Thanks, reprieve!

This is how I carry the Desk Pen - in a Quiver attached to a Moleskine notebook:

Actually, when I'm carrying the notebook, the Desk Pen is completely covered in its "kimono" which is faced toward the notebook. Maybe kindv hard to see in this photo, but gives the idea.

Okay, let's see if this is helpful at all:

The lighting is terrible, but I'm super busy, but I won't have time to do this before Monday if I didn't do this RIGHT QUICK right now, so....

In the third photo, the nibs are (two lines each, except for the fourth and eighth):

M - ruthenium-plated (Noodler's Black with a touch of Noodler's Old Manhattan Blackety-Black Black)

M - standard monotone gold (Noodler's Standard Brown with a touch of Noodler's Firefly)

F - ruthenium-plated (Noodler's Black with a touch of Noodler's Old Manhattan Blackety-Black Black)

F - ruthenium-plated (Noodler's Schreibtinte Braun)

M - standard monotone gold (Noodler's Apache Sunset)

F - standard monotone gold (Platinum Mix Free SP:SY (1:1)

stub - monotone gold (Noodler's Beaver - sample from isellpens (which is slightly different from the bottle and another sample))

M - standard monotone soft gold (Platinum Blue-Black cartridge)

The Moleskine rule (ruling?) is 6mm; the Clairefontaine grid is 5mm. The ink goes down thicker on the former.

Thanks, ether! I have been wondering if the Soft M put down a thicker line than the normal M; I'm glad to see that there doesn't appear to be much difference.

What possessed you to get a soft nib, anyway? I thought you preferred the nails.

It is HERE!!!!!!!!!!! What a pen--I thought my other Nakayas were absolute delights in every way, but honestly, if I had to pick one to write with (HAD TO, mind you) then I'm certain it would be this Aka-tamenuri desk pen with the cursive italic nib. Again, thank you, Lisa, for the encouragement of your various posts about the joys of the desk pen. This pen dances in the hand! Yea, Nakaya, yea Nakaya!!!

Awesome, thanks...

very interesting - the nibs are remarkably consistent.

I was wondering about the soft Medium ; does it flex, and if so, does it take a lot of effort? Thanks again,

Okay, let's see if this is helpful at all:

Nope! These are the new ones:

fpn_1348711115__it-20120926_the_new_nakaya_pair.jpg

Top: Aka tamenuri Naka-ai Cigar

Bottom: Kuro tamenuri Long Piccolo Cigar

I'll take better photos and post 'em. Gotta eat dinner. (GOTTA!)

Jim, I'm sorry to hear that. Oi. Why couldn't the teen rearend a tree? I mean, hit something without hurting anyone else? I hope you feel better soon.

Geoduc, I "tag" (watermark?) every photo I upload to the Internet, no matter how good or bad. I don't want, for instance, people using my photos to sell their pens on eBay.

I want to take better photos of these pens, though. Cos they're gorgeous.

That Aka color is growing on me, i already decided which model but still cant decide which color to get (heki, aka, shu, kikyo) argh...

Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing

I do prefer nails, but variety is the... is the... what is it? It's the something of life.... The... surprise of life? The delight? Something.

:-)

I don't remember why I wanted a soft M. I'm thinking of stubbing it. Hm.

Here's another comparison of the M vs. F with the same (or similar) inks:

Oh! I remember! Variety is the saffron of life!

DANNYBOY!

*Dance, dance! Dance, dance! Happy Nakaya Dance-dance!*

Hooray!

AAAAaaannnnD! The Desk Pen doubles as a magic wand! Yes! (Shhh... tell no one...!)

It's true.

tenurepro -- The extra sample was to address your curiosity about the nibs, the soft M in particular. I wouldn't call it a flex nib. A little pressure adds, yeah, some variation, but, ah... it would be very slow going, I think, to write with it, expecting that kind of variation. But I'm not a patient writer, so.... Let me say that it would take ME a lot of effort. Then again, a wet noodle takes me a lot of effort. I'm not the best judge.

leod - THAT is why I have eight Nakayas.

Yep....

Eight.

And I haven't even started considering the Ascending Mythical Beast options.

Lisa,

Would you say the soft M is more like the springiness of a Pelikan M1000 type of nib?

I am really starting to fall for the Nakaya charm trying to work out all the choices. The information in this thread is a huge help!

Thanks

Dave

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
