Montblanc Nib Pictures

Just wondering what is the width of the writing point on your (5) 149, 18C BBB (c 1960s).

Its very debatable how or what a BBB nib size should be.

I am asking because I have one that fall between a BB - BBB and not sure which is more accurate to address it.

I would love to know if there is a a range to call it BBB

Mine has a writing point of 1.64mm - 1.7mm

Perhaps some of the experts here can weigh in on the range of size for B - BB - BBB nibs. I am guessing the range has changed somewhat from vintage to modern, but I'd be very interested to learn so I can be more accurate.

I have been putting off getting digital calipers but your picture and question have pushed me over the edge, and I've just ordered one for myself. Once I get the calipers I will measure and post here the width of the nib on my 149.

OK, since you've bumped the thread back to life, I might as well show what I have in the pipeline. I've returned my Axis Mundi skeleton to the factory to have a bespoke signature nib fitted. This is what it looks like so far:

It is the only one I know of on an Axis Mundi skeleton. It is going to be beautiful.

I'll put up some pics once it is back.

Wowowow! That is just awesome!

Georges, You have quite the collection! You gotta either use a tripod or lay off the espresso to get a less shaky picture. :D

Just kidding, of course.

I noticed today that the link to your photos at #34 of this thread is broken and I'm hoping you can fix it so we are able to see those photos.

Cheers, DAVID

It was the same photo as far as I can remember but that was before I reorganized my photobucket by themes. The picture @ post number 34 was taken a year or two ago and unfortunately after a certain time you can't edit your posts anymore. But I will make some better photos of my MB nibs later when I will have the time

Here are some of mines:

146P EF, 2011

146P F, 2004

Is it just the angle, or is the 146P EF 2011 slightly different from the 146P F 2004? The 146P EF 2011 looks like the border of gold at the head of the nib tapers and becomes thinner towards the top, while the 146P F 2004 has a border of gold that tapers less (is more constant).

I know I added these to my own post, but I figured I might as well add them here too. ;)

I love looking at everyone's nibs! Very cool.

Hi Mtrap,

I got my digital calipers in today's mail and first thing I did was measure the MB nib - it is 1.65mm at the tip, almost exactly the same as yours. From my experience with other pens, 1.65 clearly qualifies as a BBB; for example, a Nakaya BB is 1.0mm, a Bexley stub nib is 1.2mm and a Pelikan BBB is 1.3mm (these are all pens I have - the measurements are from the nibs.com tip size chart). Regardless of how it is classified, the 18C nib on my 149 is wide, smooth and wonderful! I hope you like yours as much.

DAVID

PS, beautiful nibs being shown here, and great photos!

This is currently my favourite thread, made better by this fantastically useful exercise in nib measurement.

I'm off to buy a digital caliper.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
