Tokiwa-matsu is not a color I would normally love. I like my greens on the warm side, but this is a definite pine that borders on emerald in some light. Yet there is something very special about it. I wish it were better behaved on cheap paper, but I guess there is no perfect thing. It should get plenty of pocket time in any case. Tokiwa looks especially nice on ivory paper.

 

Quick sketch of a sphere on cheap Strathmore watercolor paper. Notice how the line does not hold at all with a light wash. I haven't done any proper sketching with this one and I'm not likely to; it will be relegated to background washes if anything. Strangely, it may work for skies...

 

Care was taken to ensure color accuracy, but it was a tough one. It seems I could only get the Tokiwa-matsu or the Alt-goldgrün to look right, never both. Hopefully it's not too far off.

An interesting ink I may try. I use yama dori for correspondence and am often getting comments on the sheen. Since I use a good quality paper this sounds like an ink to try. Thanks for the review.

 

the ink might be interesting to try for drawing. I often do fountain pen line drawings and use a water wash over the lines for areas of tone. I had a watercolor instructor that said that a painting is better if there are some 'perhaps and maybe so's', it sounds as if this ink might deliver.

If you can make it work, I'd love to see the results posted here. As I said above, a wash just obliterates the line, so you'll have to be very careful where you wash and you'll likely have to re-ink afterwards.

It sounds like an ink to avoid when addressing envelopes!

 

That was exactly my thought. I'll usually just use whatever is in the pen to address envelopes for everyday letters and cards. Definitely not this one.

 

 

Your reviews are so great! And oh, the photos. You really captured that reddish sheen!

 

Thanks. I'm glad you like them. I read you had a bunch of pinks on the way. You might as well try your hand at a multi-pink comparo!

Great review, my first thoughts were for Cyber6, Sinstral1 and Vis who love murky greens. I'd think about Geoduc too, but he doesn't post much anymore.

 

You can add me to that group that loves murky greens. The only thing I like better is a cool desaturated, cool brown.

I'm just glad they still love me.... I want clear, super saturated, retina searing colors. Cape Cod Cranberry is a little too subtle for me.

I was recently asked by my wife to pen a Thank Youu note to our local Tender Greens restaurant, who donated catering to an event promoting eating local foods that she organized. I used Sailor's Tokiwa-matsu, which has become one of my go-to calligraphy inks.

 

It is difficult to represent this in photos because, when this amount of ink is laid down, Tokiwa loses its greenness and just kinda sheens an iron-red. The effect is really very nice in person and I hope the pictures give you some kind of idea about the potential of this ink for calligraphy.

 

Paper is Original Crown Mill Pure Cotton, A5 sheet folded in half. I used a Zebra G nib, dipped. The lupine was painted in with a brush pen filled with water and dipped into Iroshizuku Yama-budo.

I really like Sailor Jentle inks. They are a bit more difficult to find, however.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
