Toffee Brown - Montblanc

I have to admit, the company that makes ink for Montblanc usually get things right.

Toffee Brown is really great, saturated brown ink I enjoy a lot.

Thank you. I love this ink. Oh and it does well in fade tests.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I like the grayish-browns, like J. Herbin Lie de Thé, better than the reddish ones. This is a nice looking ink, but I haven't yet seen a Montblanc ink I couldn't live without. I'm more than ready to be convinced otherwise.

This is my favourite brown ink, I love it :)

UK-based pen fan. I love beautiful ink bottles, sealing wax, scented inks, and sending mail art. Also, thanks to a wonderful custom-ground nib by forum member Bardiir, I'm currently attempting calligraphy after years of not being able to do so due to having an odd pen-grip :D

I really enjoy this Montblanc ink... very saturated, flows well and has zero feathering except on the cheapest of copy papers. I have it loaded up with a Conklin Stylograph Mosaic... a perfect match with this medium nib that runs a bit on the finer side.

Your colour range image is closer to my experience of Toffee Brown, that orange brown is what attracted me. It is a beautiful, well lubricated ink that is constantly in at least one pen! Thank you for the review. The top image looks like my new bottle of Iroshizuku Yama-Guri - a colour which I have to say is confusing me greatly!

I find it to be a rich wonderful brown with a great feel on the page. I just wish it were more water resistant... Of all my inks, this may be the least tolerant of a little splash of water.

Has anyone else experienced nearly complete vanishing of this ink with water?

I have never swum with it, I'm sorry... :lticaptd:

Love, love, love this ink. Bought it just to see if it was any good and wanted a brown to fill my Pilot Custom 823. I have other browns, but this is the best of the 4. Yes, it does have wonderful shading, but the flow! I love the flow and lubrication of this stuff. I thought the Iroshizuku and Sailor inks had the "flow" title in the bag, but this is right up there with them. The only downside is the dry time, but I can live with it in this case.

Everyone who has seen this ink remarks on how it looks. The shading really is impressive. I don't care about water resistance at all, so that's not a factor for me. I'm not going to be writing letters underwater, and if I'm in a situation where I need an ink with that quality, I'll use one of the many available.

i honestly don't understand why lack of water resistance bothers so many people. I can count on one finger the amount of times where something I wrote got wet, and that was way back in college when I was caught in the rain and my notebooks were unprotected. And that was also before I started using fountain pens. These days, if I'm out and about and there's the threat of rain, I put papers in a plastic portfolio inside my bag. I also don't write near something that could spill.

If you need water resistance, there are dozens of options that possess that quality. So I think "water resistance" or "waterproofness" should only be considered or evaluated if an ink claims to be such. If not, who cares? Why knock it then?

I was actually looking at this ink a few days ago but I finally decided not to buy it. I don't really like browns, especially with a red tint...

These scans are strange, and make it look way more red than it actually is, at least in my experience. It's more of an orange tint, if anything. I also don't like browns with a red tint either, and I love this stuff. This is no Diamine Rustic Brown, if that's what you're thinking.

I love the ink as well. I see your point, but the knock about water resistance is based more than the possibility of getting caught in the rain though. One drop of water - such as if you just wished your hands or a coffee mug, etc. - leaves an empty spot. Water resistance is important if you plan to highlight and don't want a yellow-brown smear. Also if you hands get a little sweaty or damp and smear across the page. Again, there are multiple less dramatic situations where just a LITTLE water resistance is nice.

I still use the ink, but I have to treat it differently than most of my other inks. If you have to use an ink with conditions, I think it is fair to "knock" the ink. I also think it is good to let others know ALL the properties of the ink beyond just the fantastic flow and rich brown color.

And again -- this is not meant to trash the ink. It is definitely my favorite brown.

I see what you're saying. I can see the highlighting situation as being annoying, but again, it doesn't apply to me. I use gel pens and ballpoints as well as fountain pens, so highlighting FP ink is not a situation I find myself in. Neither is writing with my FP's with wet hands or near mugs and things that could spill, so those situations don't apply to me personally either. But I see how they could apply to others now that you've explained it.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
