    Hey from Los Angeles!

Hi everyone! I can’t believe that I never found this forum until today and I’m so happy that I did. I’ve been a fountain pen lover since 2017 and will be for the rest of time. A Pilot Metro MR was my first pen and the collection has been growing ever since. Happy to be in a community like this and looking forward to spending time with you all chatting about what we love the most, these wonderful pens and writing

Does Sailor make a pigmented sepia or brown ink?

Thank you @A Smug Dill. That is good to know and would be greatly appreciated. I was just talking with a friend in Kariuzawa last night and it looks like we may be in Japan sometime this Autumn. Any information about what to look for would be very helpful.

More Nib Choices On Pilot Custom 743 and Custom 823!

My understanding is Pilot of North America is not a distributor but a subsidiary of Pilot of Japan. Prices per market are affected by myriad factors. Just as a counterpoint for anyone researching a Pilot fountain pen purchase, I have around ten gold-nibbed Pilot foutain pens in my collection at any given moment. They are some of the best writers, out of the box, period. I just inked up my SM Custom 912 and recalled that it is a delightfully juicy writer. I'll never disagree that ebonite makes for a great feed, but stock Pilot feeds have been nothing short of exceptional for me (including an FA transplanted onto a Custom 823). The Pilot USA warranty, in my experience, is not only worth its weight in gold but it's also so good and reliable that they'd probably still service a "compromised" pen, no questions asked (and yes, I have gotten service from Pilot USA, no questions asked). Pilot fountain pens, every single one of them, at all price points, are the only ones I would recommend without caveat to anyone. (Again, I usually have at least ten gold-nibbed Pilot's in my rotation at any given moment.) To prove that I'm not blinded by loyalty, I'll admit that Pilot could spice things up with a more regular release of limited edition colors, etc.

    Broke a Vacumatic pump

If anyone knows how to fix this. I have the same problem with two of my duofold vacumatics.

    Stub O'Day Part Two

Yes, thanks @SLinkster as I've wondered about these two grinds in particular. Sounds like either would fit my needs quite well, with S.I.G. having a slight lead (for me) based on your description.
  11. OMG, what a beauty! I occasionally search ebay for that M200, usually to no avail. Finally found one just the other day but they wanted $1300! That's almost 3 Optimas.

Does Sailor make a pigmented sepia or brown ink?

Sailor used to make a (not advised/advertised as being mixable) STORiA Lion Light Brown pigment ink. I like the ink, both for its near-waterproofness and its colour that (to me) is closer to orange than to brown; but it was discontinued some time back to make way for the STORiA MiX ink series that came after. That said, Sailor has been known to make some STORiA inks as limited editions or store exclusive editions in the Asian market, so for all I know it may still actually make a brown pigment ink today that is largely inaccessible to would-be purchasers in the West. If I come across one when I'm in Osaka in a few weeks' time, I'll be sure to let you know.

And I am a “C-WORD” collector and have many pens that I have never and will never use. I fail to see the point.

    Vintage Shaffer question

Ok so here we are. Thankfully it wasn't crazy glued on. I took a close up of the nib. Still needs cleaning Looks like I can get parts for around 30 plus a touchdown sac and seal kit so that seems reasonable to me to put this pen back together as a touchdown

    Broke a Vacumatic pump

Sorry here is the picture. As you can see it's broken at the part that screws in. The pump is still screwed in from the top so there is no way to push the pump out. It certainly looks all plastic

    I love old nibs.

@Mercian thanks for the thoughtful response, I hadn’t thought about the fact that most of the bad nibs would have filtered out of the market by now.

Does Sailor make a pigmented sepia or brown ink?

Thanks for the link @Carrau. Lovely ink and interesting review but I fear that “some water resistance” won’t hold up to watercolor washes when painting.
  18. Update: it came off with soapy water and patience! I carved a new rubber gasket for my pen and following the instructions on the video/website was enough. Also i didn't use heat

Holy cephlapod! That’s amazing! This looks like a must try just to see what it looks like and how well it works. @Karmachanic, have you tried it yet?

    Greetings from a Pilot nerd

Welcome! I only have two Pilots. A metal Falcon and a 743. But they are my two pens that always, always write right away, no matter how long they’re stowed away.

So many unusual ballpoints, good thing I can generally resist the temptation for those. Glad you had good luck with them. The Parker poker chips are great! Brian

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
