Montblanc 146 vs Hommage Chopin FP - what are the differences

Hi all

I have a question. I have read quite a bit on here about the various Montblanc FPs and am pretty sure my next purchase will be a 146. The nib size is yet to be determined ; )

Here is my question: Is the Meisterstruck Hommage to Frederick Chopin FP the same size as a 146 FP?

The reason I ask is that I stopped into one of the only pen dealers near me that has Montblancs and asked to see a 146. The sales woman handed me a very nice pen which did not have the usually ink window ( not sure of the proper term ) which I have seen in so many pictures of the 146. When I asked if this was a 146 she said yes. Still not sure I asked again if it was perhaps another model because this pen clearly did not have the ink window. She then said that yes in fact this was a different model, it was the Hommage to Frederick Chopin FP.

With that cleared up I have to say I really like the pen and would just like to know if it is the same size as the 146 for the sake of comparison.

Also if there are any other differences I’d appreciate knowing them.

Thanks in advance for any help in clearing this up.

The 145 Chopin is thicker than a Classic 144 but thinner than a 146. 146 is also a little longer and has a bigger nib. Both use threaded caps. The 145 is converter/ cart filled where the 146 is piston filled. These are the main differences.

What has been said above sums it up.

Additionally, the MS 145 Chopin has a longer and narrower gripping section than the MS 146, and the section is embellished with a metal ring whereas the MS 146 section has no ring.

Thank you for the replies. Those differences certainly are substantial enough that when I ask a Montblanc dealer for a 146 and she hands me a 145 Hommage to Chopin I should be at least be slightly taken aback.

It seems I need to look for a dealer with perhaps a more knowledgeable or at least a more trustworthy staff. Or maybe just a dealer with a larger Montblanc inventory. It is always possible that this particular store just did not have a 146 in stock.

I am more than a bit leery of a retailer who would hand me a 145 when I ask for a 146 and not tell me the difference until I questioned it.

Thank you again

Hi there, I recently went in to Mappin and webb in London and asked to try both the 145 Chopin and the 146, they where both presented to me and my first response was that the 146 was to big for my liking. The 145 was just the right size (I have small hands, so it might be different for you). I found the 146 a bit to chunky for my taste, the 145 was a fair bit thinner and shorter then the 146 which as I have mentioned I preferred. You really need to go to a more knowledgeable dealer and try both pens out as there are a few different between them. The main ones being the 146 is piston filler and is substantially bigger then the 145.

Hope this helps

I would get the 146. The filling system is killer (unless of course you want the cartridge/converter option). The 146 was my first choice pen, but it was too expensive, so I got the 145 instead. Though I don't completely regret the purchase, the 146 would be preferred, given a choice, for me.

Montblanc 145, F nib
Faber Castell E-Motion in Pearwood, F nib
Montblanc 149, F nib
Visconti Divina Proporzione 1618, S nib
Montblanc Cool Blue Starwalker, EF nib
Montblanc Solitaire Silver Barley BP
Montblanc Rouge et Noir Coral, M nib

Other comments spot on. I have a Chopin, and it is quite a bit trimmer than a 146, and certainly alot smaller than a 149. One wouldn't ever get a 145 and 146 confused. The 145 is actually a bit small for my taste, a 149 too big. Maybe a 146 might be the ticket.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
