egyptomania hieroglyphs....source/translation?

Recommended Posts

I have long been drawn to fps that feature various scripts in some fashion (heart sutra pens, looking at you!), and of course the Egyptomania doué appealed to me right away.

If memory serves, MB attributed the hieroglyphs to the Book of the Dead, but I never managed to find a more detailed explanation (such as, an excerpt with translation or etc).

Does anyone happen to have more information or links/online resources they could share?

Thanks!

@seimodern Thank you for making this query.  I have often wondered about the engraved hieroglyphs on the Egyptomania Doué but have not actively searched for a translation, so I am hopeful that someone here can point us in the correct direction.

May google lens work ?

@PENRob What a great suggestion!  Perhaps Google’s Fabricius or Hieroglyphs AI could translate the engravings on the barrel of the Egyptomania Doué.  It is definitely worth a try.  Thank you very much!

White stone mountain may mean PIRAMID ? For sure most applicable in Egypt

By origine the Gizeh piramids were covered with (white) limestone, but taken away during history for house building etc...

@PENRob I believe the cartouche circled in red in the screen capture below

IMG_4615.jpeg.a3982c6070cf5ef9a4ae2d32a952ed9f.jpeg
translates to “White Stone Mountain,” and refers to the Mont Blanc peak, as an allusion to the brand Montblanc.

What we need translated are the hieroglyphs engraved on the platinum- and ruthenium-coated vintage-effect barrel sleeve.

I very much like the connection between Mont Blanc (Stone White Mountain) and the ancient white pyramid(s).

Great thread. Thank you.

(I've always enjoyed imagining how magnificent the pyramids must have appeared, with their gleaming white outer covering and gold capstones. And still now, of course, in their depleted grandeur. Monumental works!)

Wrong link by me... MONT BLANC, ofcourse, logical afterall !

@PENRob I prefer to think that you have come up with an additional link which perhaps was also intended by Montblanc designers.

As @CS388 notes above, this link between the Mont Blanc peak and the Egyptian pyramids is fitting and pleasant to contemplate.

Well, that was a long search for the meaning of White Stone Mountain while that is mentioned in the MB article description of the pen 😉

It‘s better we’d ask user Champollion, as far as I know he is speaking Old Egyptian fluently.

@lamarax The idea with the Rosetta Stone is good! Maybe you can help us with the Greek part, before we try Google Translate again..

An Egyptian noble bought a Montblanc stone  pyramid for his underlings to carve heiroglyphs telling us how wonderful he/she was.

On Egyptian times the 149 wasn't a finely nibbed fountain pen, but a chisel.

@Todor I was surprised to still be able to locate this link — https://www.montblanc.com/en-us/discover/campaign/egyptomania

— from which I found the phrase ‘Created in partnership with an expert Egyptologist, the octagonal precious resin cap of the writing instrument is decorated with authentic hieroglyphs that translate as “white stone mountain”, denoting Montblanc.’

@seimodern Indeed, and from this link —

https://www.montblanc.com/en-us/discover/campaign/egyptomania

— can be found the statement ‘The barrel of the Doué is inscribed with hieroglyphs from the ancient “Book of the Dead” – one of the most important Egyptology discoveries that contains magic spells intended to assist while journeying through the underworld to access the afterlife.’

Moet than th pyramids themselve, is the craftmanship of its creators with ( in out eyes) just basic tools and probably much ingeniousity.

Yes, they created „White Stone Mountain“ instead of a MB hallmark which was a bold idea, maybe too bold to put this in a cartouche as this was the privilege of Egyptian kings to have their names written this way.

In fact, the quotes on the side are not from The Book of the Dead as there were every time an individualised sequence of 190 declarations and spells regarding the person in particular. Montblanc‘s quotes are from the Papyrus of Hunifer who was a scribe and high official of pharaoh Sethos I. His book is dated ca. 1300 BC:

Part of the Book of Hunifer

I am not sure if they have put golden capstones. I‘ve been told they did something even more fascinating: they tried to connect to the Sun, so they put an exterior coating made of electrum alloy atop pyramids and obelisks what is a mix of gold and silver, using alloys of white to light yellowish colour to reflect the rays of the Sun — a powerful god itself.
For ancient people this must have been stunning in the best meaning of the word!

@Todor Thank you very much for this information, especially, of course, for enlightening us that the Egyptomania Doué’s barrel engravings quote Hunefer’s Book of the Dead.  I am actually utilising Google Translate to peruse the Wikipedia article that you have generously linked.

In that spirit, here is another link, this one to Khan Academy:

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
