What Pens Do You Want?

What pens do you want?  They can be grail pens, too expensive pens, discontinued pens, hard to find in your country pens. Just basically pens you want?

I’ll go first. I really want the discontinued Levenger True Writer Kyoto. I even thought I’d buy the rollerball or ballpoint version. I saw one for $66. Uh no, as it turns out. That’s too much for a ballpoint; it’s basically retail. I’m going to keep checking eBay, and also see if Levenger reissues the Kyoto because I want it as a fountain pen. If one is patient, eventually a wanted pen does show up. I got the True Writer Sea Glass, and Monteverde Mountains of the World K2 and Fuji by being persistent in the hunt. It took years.

The Edison Comet looks interesting, but I don’t feel like I can spend that much at the moment.

I’d like a Kaweco AL Vibrant Violet, and the exclusive Mercury Orange AL at Gold Spot. Those are more attainable. The new Art Sports have caught my eye. I just don’t know about which color, and it is over $100.

I want a flat top, Sailor KOP size, black Nikko Ebonite pen in matte finish (black clip, no trims), which comes with well tuned 10 different #8 nib units (EF-BBB, OB, OBB, B Arch, BB Arch ). Don't care steel or gold. CC/ED will do, so long as i can switch nib units and convertors on the fly. But weight and balance similar to M800s.  Section around 14mm straight or pinched. I won't need another pen then.

(who am i kidding)

So many vintage pens. I really want a vacumatic, I think they are the prettiest pen ever made. I also really want a duofold, royal challenger, Sheaffer balance, some sort of vintage Pelikan, an early eyedropper, a wet noodle, a Conklin crescent, the list goes on and on. Modern pens are great too, but vintage pens are so much more interesting and stylish IMO. I don't think I'll ever have enough.

I want a Namiki Emperor Kirin , just looking at the pic made me have goosebumps all over.
But there is zero chance I would be able to afford it, so it is a "dream" pen through and through.

I also want a Pilot custom Urushi, before they announced the price raise, I was casually hoping to get one maybe this year or the next.
But then now its price point is very close to some other urushi models from different brands, I am not sure if I want it that much because if I had that budget, the choices are now much wider.

It’s cool to read what others want. Ah, vintage pens. Yes they are worth the hunt once you understand how to spot the good ones.

I’ve seen a photo of a Urushi pen. And heard of the Sailor KOP. It was mentioned on the thread about if you had $1000 to spend on a pen thread.

I think I have cheaper tastes now. I spent on Visconti pens years ago. Now I’m not as comfortable spending so much on a single pen. But circumstances change.

Nothing fancy, but I had a black and white marbled Chinese fountain pen (don't even recall the name but I saw it once on the 'bay).  It didn't write like I wanted so I gave it away.  Now, though, I could probably get it writing well.

I want it back.

PS, looked it up: Huashilai 3000.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I think I finally reached my limit thanks to a striped Geha 760, a red wood Pilot Capless and a silver Dunhill (Gemline Dress?), so hopefully I'll be able to resist some of the ones that got away:

To experience the nib:

Lamy 2000 probably M.

Mabie Todd Swan.

Lus Giubileo.

Aurora 88.

Parker 51

Just for looks:

Sailor 1911 Peacock (fat chance, limited edition, particularly with a $160 max budget) or PG Lucky Charm, MS nib.

Soennecken striped.

Can't complain with 68 pens that get along great with specific inks. I still need to finish restoring a Waterman 54V, replace a 52's cap, a Geha 725 that writes too thin.

Hmm, I already have enough pens, but that doesn't mean that I don't find a few appealing:

  • Pilot e95S
  • Parker Vacumatic (blue with the two-tone nib)
  • Parker Duovac (blue or red stripes)
  • Sheaffer Sentinel (snorkel fill)
  • Pilot Myu
  • Pilot Vanishing Point

Probably won't buy many or any of these, but they do have my interest.

@Checklist if you were looking at the Pilot e95s would you look at new ones, or vintage Pilot Elites?

I got a Pilot Elite on Amazon. The nib writes wide for a Japanese M nib.

A couple that I think I would like at some point in time.

Parker 75 Cisele

Pelikan M405 Stresseman

Pelikan 400/400NN tortoise (vintage)

The Cisele is probably closest budget wise.

I'd mostly look at the new ones, especially the burgundy and white version.  Haven't seen a vintage one with a design that I like as much.

Do you mean that it's close to a Western medium or just that it's wider than you expected for a Japanese medium?  I like the width of my fine LAMY 2000, so something close to that would be what I'd look for.

I've been on a quest to collect all of the colors of the Pelikan M200/M205 Demonstrators. I just Have the M200 Anthracite to acquire and maybe the M205 Clear Demonstrator as I'd love to have it in both the gold and the silver colored accents. Why I feel the need to collect all the colors? I'm not sure why, but I just find collecting an entire series really satisfying. It's probably the sort of consumer compulsion I should be discussing with my therapist. 😁

I've already completed the Pelikan Cities and Places Collection and have the last two of their M101N series on the way. I went a little crazy after 3 years of not buying fountain pens.

Then, I have a few grail pens that I left too long and have increased in price or become too tough to find.

1. Pelikan 2013 Special Edition Brown Tortoise

2. Pelikan M800 Renaissance Brown

3. Montblanc 146 Calligraphy Flex

4. Pelikan  Originals of their Times 1935 Lapis M101N

And possibly a Pilot Custom 823, because it seems so universally praised as an exceptional writer with a huge 2mL ink capacity.  Honestly though, I could stop collecting now and be perfectly satisfied with the pens that I have, but this is not a sensible hobby.

Soennecken 111. I don't really mind which size, but have a very strong preference for the sea green herringbone. If it had a nib in the oblique broad sort of range I'd be even happier.

only 1 ?

I've always wanted to collect all the 200/205 colours, once I discovered how nice (and pretty) these pens were. I came by the way of an M405 in 2021, so already late in the game, most older models were past their sales cycles. It is fascinating to know that you have them all, a family picture would be really nice to see.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
