Montblanc Rollerballs - Real or Fake?

TeddyBaker

Recommended Posts

I scored these pens at an estate sale for $1 each. They were in a box with many other various pens, including a nice Parker. The only one with a serial #is the Silver Barley pen. The other two may or may not be fakes. Any opinions? Ideas? Expert advice? Im thinking to sell them on eBay.

Thanks so much to all who reply.

I figured the gold ones to be fake. However, I figured the silver one to be real. It has a serial # on the clip-band. Do you think the silver one is real?

Upon close inspection, I see the word "Laiton" marked inside the clip of the silver pen. It is very heavy and feels like real silver.

Brass can also make the pen feel heavy, if you've ever handled pens from China that are all metal, you'd find them heavy, in fact using google translate that term "Laiton" know the answer and would not need any more "proof". Try searching for a hallmark on the pen to denote that what you have is made of silver, google montblanc hallmarks and read up. "Experts" can only do so much with pictures. You can also learn from visitng sites like Alibaba and the likes you'd be surprised at the pictures they have on their website selling fakes in every colour.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say real - maybe, for the 'silver' RB. Others are fake.

The clip is 'laiton' = brass, because precious metal would bend too easily.

It is the original barleycorn pattern, not the same as the modern barley pattern.

Is there a fineness mark on the cap?

Does the refill screw in?

My concern is that the clip, cap bands and section are not gold plated, but maybe there was a silver plated version.

I'm not an expert!

Thank you for your opinion. The refill screws out. There is a tiny mark on the cap that I did not see until you asked, and I checked with a magnifying glass. The mark reads "925" with an oval beneath that I belive has the letters "STOD". It's so small, I can barely see itbwith the glass. Thank you very much for your reply.

Thank you for your reply and for your input. I found the number 925 on the cap with a hallmark inside an oval. I will attempt to lookup the hallmark. I appreciate your time and help with this.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
