Montblanc pen and desk holder mismatch

I'm new to this forum.  I have a Montblanc fountain pen which I have owned for about 40 years.  Works just fine but it doesnt not screw into the Montblanc desk holder that I recently purchased online.  So I guess there must be a different pen for use in Montblanc desk holders?  Can anybody educate me?

Does the size of the desk pen socket (146 or 149) correspond to the size of the pen (146 or 149)? If the pen fits in the socket but does not screw in, there might be a problem with the inner cap of the desk pen socket.

Thank you, Joss, for the reply.  I'm pretty sure my pen is a 146 but the caps on both the desk holder and the pen itself are identicle in size.  Is there a fix if it is the inner cap?

The caps look identical indeed. Is it possible to unscrew the gold metal dome/connector from the desk pen socket? If so, the inner cap can be released from the socket and you can check whether that resolves the problem. If it does, the inner cap may be a tad too long thereby preventing the pen from reaching the socket's inner threads. But that is only a guess.

It doesn't appear that it can be unscrewed and I'm fearful of damaging the holder.  I have threded it on before but it immediately feels like it's cross-threading so I dont do that.  I sure appreciate your thoughts, Joss.

I have a similar situation with an MB 149.  It does not screw into a desk pen holder.  A different 149 does fit into the holder.  You probably need a different holder to match your pen.  Don't try to force your pen into the holder.

There is a definite difference between an "early 80s" pens and later versions for these pen sets.    The screw threads are different on both 149 and 146 after a point in the 1990s, and I have not been able to nail down the timeframe for the change.

But I can probably change out your desk holder with spare caps I have on hand if you want .

Hard times don't last, but hard people do.

Thank a Veteran.
