Does that mean the same as "they are not at all alike"?

Yes.

The normal ef is like a Sailor M-F nib. I'm quite used to European size nibs so it doesn't bother me but I know it bothers some. Sometimes you can get quite a fine ef from MB but it won't be like Japanese sizes. I have a Sailor needlepoint that produces a very nice hairline but is stiff as a nail, so no variation. The Solitaire calligraphy nib is very, very similar (unflexed) to the line produced by tge needlepoint.

Mine arrived today but I have been so sick with flu and a pinched sciatica nerve, the most I could do was consider what should be its maiden ink.

Mine has shown an initial preference for medium wet ink.  Hope you get well soon!

I newly discovered that I really enjoy this pen as a daily writer as well. With 149C, I almost always use it for practising calligraphy or doodling. I have used the 146C for normal writing and find it very nice, an EF with line variation and is bouncy due to the flex. I don't have another 146 in EF to compare with, but my 146C produces the same EF lines as with the finest EF nib of my Heritage line pens which is a rather small nib (on my Rouge et Noir Coral).

I have a few EF nibs from MB. I find the 146C is a tab bit finer.

To @bunnspecial and any others awaiting shipment of a 146C from IguanaSell. I was informed today, 17 February, that my pen has finally shipped. I purchased it on 11 January and was told then that it might be as long as 40 days before one was available. It is good to know that they have apparently received more in stock, so hopefully anyone else awaiting a Montblanc 146C from Iguana Sell will be getting a shipment notice soon.

Thanks! I ordered mine on the 12th and was just thinking about the 40 days, so hope I'll see it soon.

I also just received mine! I'm quite excited by it and I find it lovely. I'm already going through my various nibs and figuring out what I want to start working with.

My 146C, shipped from Iguana Sell in Madrid last Thursday via FedEx, was to have been delivered on Monday of this week, the 20th. However, when it reached New Jersey last Friday it was and continues to be held awaiting a "toxic substance statement" for whatever ink is apparently in the package. I contacted Iguana and they have assured me that all necessary paperwork has been filed. Nevertheless, my pen remains in limbo in New Jersey which is frustrating after having waited since January and having it now so close...

@bunnspecial, not trying to be nosy, but am curious if you have received notice yet of your pen being shipped?

I came here to post last night but never managed to do it.

Not a peep from them so far. Seems like I was far enough down their list to not get in on this shipment. I'm really hoping the next one, whenever they get it, is me.

@bunnspecialI'm sorry to hear that. They must have really sold a lot of them since our orders we're only 24-hours apart. Either that or Montblanc is only giving them just a very few at a time. Hopefully yours will ship soon.

Me too!

My order was Jan. 12th at 9:49PM CST...so we'll see. I suspect that they probably did sell a lot, and it wouldn't surprise me if individual shipments are single digit quantities.

Oh well, just bought a celluloid 146(one of my "bucket list in 2022 pens") with a nice flexible M nib to enjoy in the mean time. I may be more excited about that than I am the 146C. I'm also hopefully going to be buying a celluloid EF 149 in the next week...

Inky experience so far:

Fritz Schimpf Gellassenheit: At first quite good, then began skipping.

Iroshizuku Syo-Ro: Skipped very badly. Couldn't use it, so switched to:

Fritz Schimpf Sirimiri: Skipped very badly. Couldn't use it, so switched to:

Montblanc Irish Green: So far seems a little better. Still skips some, but not as badly as with the above inks.

After Irish Green, I  will try Permanent Black. And I'll order a bottle of Permanent Blue.

When I say skipping, it's not that the feed runs dry, it's that the ink that's in the feed and nib slit, ready to be delivered to the paper, somehow pulls back at the very tip instead of being laid down on the paper. I seem to recall a previous mention of the nib slit on the 149 C being tighter or closer than on most pens, which for some reason was necessary, and would open up a bit with use. That may be the issue here. Though I never had this issue with the 149 C, the Gold Leaf or The Expressive (the latter had many other issues at first, but not this one).

  • 3 weeks later...

To those of you who may have had the opportunity to try both the 146C and 149C. From a writing & performance standpoint, if you could only have one, which would you pick? Being larger, I would expect the 149C nib to be the slightly softer of the two and to have a greater range, however, Montblanc claims they both will flex from 0.3 mm to 1.6 mm. If you have been fortunate enough to try both of these pens, what has your experience been?

As I have small to medium hands, I never really considered the 149 and just assumed it would not fit as well as the 146, which I find to be very comfortable to write with (for health reasons travel is very difficult and I have never had the opportunity to hold a 149). However, if the consensus is that the 149C significantly outperforms the 146C then I may have to reconsider.

Thanks very much in advance to all who take the time to respond to this question. As I wasn't quite sure where this question belongs, I also posted it to the "The Meisterstück 149 Calligraphy Appreciation Thread", so please forgive me for the duplication.

I have both the 149c and the 146c.

I got the 149c over two years ago and have misused it a bit in learning to use a flex.

I have a 146c 3-4 weeks.

In terms of how they write. I find they both can write a nice EF with no pressure. Comparable to my Pilot EFs.

When flexed both go to roughly the San he width.

However, I find the level of pressure required to flex the 149c is much less than the 146c. The 146c feels stiffer. I sometimes think it "unflexes" more quickly too.

I've used 149s for some time, flex and normal, and I always found them comfortable to use for extended periods. However, I was surprised how much more comfortable I finding the 146c for extended use. I have narrow hands.

As to which would I recommend. I love them both. I do think the 146c is more likely to be an everyday pen for me.

They are very, very, similar. To recap the 149c flexes more easily and is larger. Both are excellent writers and fantastic to use.

@tunneyThank you so much for your reply. That is exactly the kind of information I am looking for. If I may impose on you just a little bit more:

1) Does the 146C really flex to 1.6 mm or do you think that is a bit optimistic?

2) Have you noticed either of the nibs performance improving the more they are used? Just wondering if I should  wait a few weeks before making a final judgment.

3) And lastly, any particular inks that you have found to be particularly good or bad for either pen?

Thanks again for your time. This information will be a big help to me.

@Doggy Daddy, by the number of posts, it appears you may be relatively new to the Fountain Pen Network, and if so, allow this relative newcomer to extend a hearty and warm welcome!  As a point of information, perhaps your questions 1) and 3) might have been answered, at least partially, by previous posters on this thread?  If you haven’t already perused all 11 pages, I highly recommend that course of action.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
