Is this MB Watch fake?

I've been chatting with someone from FB marketplace to see if a watch (bequeathed to them) is real or fake. Does anyone have any experience with these watches or know any tell-tale signs that it's a fake?

I'm personally leaning towards "high quality fake", in part because I haven't seen any on the MB website (or elsewhere) that say "Montblanc Tourbillon".

On the back it says "PJ121212 7069 Swiss Made Stainless Steel Water Resistant 30M"

Those are good indications. Have you ever seen a MB watch that says "MONTBLANC TOURBILLON" like that? I haven't.

The serial number as quoted appears on a large number of MB watches.

When I hear expressions such as (bequeathed to them) or keft by my grandfather who was a watch collector I become very dubious. It gives the seller every opportunity to avoid supply receipts or documentation, when challenged about selling a fake, they hold up their hands and say 'nothing to do with me, I explained I wasn't a watch expert'.

Kenlowe, is that the serial number or the model number? If serial number, I'm assuming that it "appears on a large number of MB watches" points towards fake, right? I'd assume serial numbers are supposed to be unique?

Yes you are right.

Fakers of MB watches and pens often use the same serial number. Each serial number should be unique to a single watch or pen.

There are a number of things that scream fake. As far as I know MB only produced two black dial tourbillons, one of which had an unusual charcoal grey shine and neither face looks anything like your picture. The hands are so wrong. MB tend to use very, very fine dauphine hands on the more dressy models which terminate to an almost needlepoint precision end. The bracelet is just brutal. I can't see MB putting such an ugly thing on any of their watches. For all the sneering about expanding business from pens it is a fact that MB now make some incredibly fine timepieces. Many are truly exceptional and MB have carved out a new niche for themselves in this area with their extreme attention to detail and finishing. All come with a price to match yet still surprisingly competitive at that level. But just to be clear, these are not something i have owned or will ever be likely to own. I greatly admire the craft, but its way above my spending power. If it's being sold cheap on the net I'd avoid. Worth remembering too that genuine articles in the timepeice world generally don't need regular servicing, but when they do they can cost significantly. Theres little point in saving for a decade to buy a €10,000 watch that you cant afford the €2000 service charge for.

I would not think Montblanc would have this as a dial setting button. They would incorporate into the other buttons.large.2D857DCC-D499-4729-9211-13B708327A42.jpeg.91cd5bf749fc032105dd5c893ed0d985.jpeg

I have a no name 3 dial Chinese automatic watch that has that button to set the week day. It’s a pain to use because you need a small hard pointy thing in order to click the button Which will mar the button.

this looks very similar to your watch

Sounds like there's a ton of evidence pointing towards fake. I let them know (as nicely as possible). Thank you all so much for your help!

I would agree - fake - and not a good one. The dial appears to be a replica of the Timewalker model design. I have never seen a tourbillon on that line of watches and would not expect to. The Timewalker models are entry level. The big date is also suspect and the finishing of the movement looks horrible.

Fake and skim reading all the posts has pointed out why.

It's tricky to determine authenticity without seeing the watch firsthand, but your suspicions are valid. Montblanc typically doesn't produce watches labeled "Montblanc Tourbillon," so it's worth questioning its authenticity.

The details on the back, like the model number and Swiss Made inscription, seem standard, but it's always best to consult a professional for a thorough assessment. By the way, if you're still exploring options, I recently stumbled upon some replica watches that are incredibly authentic-looking. They could be a budget-friendly alternative if you're in the market for luxury without the high cost.

This is off topic for the thread, but honestly if you're going to spend $1000 on a fake watch you might want to think about your choices. As you can easily get an actual quality watch from a reputable brand such as Seiko or Hamilton to name a few well within this price range with their own original design not some rip off.

At the end of the day you're lying to yourself as much as anyone else, but to each their own I suppose.

But on the original subject of the thread I agree with everyone else and it looks as if this watch is unfortunately inauthentic, I think it might not even have a Tourbillon complication in it.

Thanks,

Max

Thought that was the purpose of the three year old original post.

Add lightness and simplicate.

It's been a while since your post, but I wanted to add information.

It's a bit tricky to determine whether a watch is fake without actually seeing it up close. Often, the devil's in the details. Take a closer look at the logo, the materials used, and the overall build quality. Sometimes, inconsistencies or shoddy craftsmanship can be telltale signs of a fake. However, if you made your purchase from a trusted and reputable seller, chances are you've got the real deal. If you're still feeling uncertain, it might be worth reaching out to an expert for a second opinion.
