Hi,

 

A story is quite typical for me. I get interested in something, the idea "cooks" for some time, and then blow and burns. And get another PhD in something, be it building a car, making DYI cosmetics, grinding nibs, and most recently - URUSHI.

 

Instead of writing to much, I'll show some pictures. Below I'll try to explain what is it all about.

Wow, very beautiful. I hope you didn't get too much of a rash, I understand that urushi has the same component as poison ivy-- but obviously safe when it's dry!

Thank you, both for nice word, and concern ;) Lucky enough - I am immune ;) Very rare case of ZERO sensitivity to urushiol. So I can use poison ive or oak as wisk in sauna. Or play with urushi without gloves, what I prefer ;)

May I ask how you deal with threads? Don't apply the urushi to them or only a final clear coat? Do you recut them after? Do you purposely make them a loose fit to allow for the finish? How much extra clearance do you allow so that when parts are put together, like a cap over a section, there is no damage to the finish of the parts.

Almost all of the above ;)

- i make threads just slightly (! Slightly !) loose, usualy by sanding with mircofile (triangular crosssection, used by warhammer figures creators). It makes them also accept pigment lacquer better.

- i put 3-4 layeres on threads, sometimes more. After each of them i check parts (asemble the pen) and correct (scalpel and same file again.

- if pen design requires this , ie cap goes over body etc, i sand for some clearance bofore first layer, usualy just tenths of mimimeter. I also check along the way. I also choose design accordingly ( no ishime on such pens)

- final coats (uwazuri) are almos nin existent (less then 0,01mm total of 6-8 coats) as they are wiped off. So final check and corrections ate done boferole uwazuri. Later just perfect wipe of threads during uwazuri, geting rid of migakiko powder which loves to get into threads ;))

 

And remamber - I am not an expert. It’s just my trial and error knowledge. A lot of errors ;))

Superb effort. I've always wanted to try this but suspect that I would not have the patience, even though I would love to own an Urishi pen. Also, now that I know I might be poisoned I am less inclined.

I really like the usage of the textures on the section part of the pen. Very clever. The blue with red ends reminds me of a beautiful abstraction art

Now i find myself wondering what an urushi Parker 51 would be like...

 

And wondering if i have the patience to do this...

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
