146 Nib Repair Cost

Recommended Posts

Okay, sad day. I accidentally dropped my 146 while cleaning it. The nib is now deformed.

I'm thinking to take it to my local MB store for repairing. Any idea in what range the nib repair/exchange cost gonna be? Any suggests?

Thanks for your help!

Any nib master will be more affordable in case there is damage to the nib only.

Good luck

Michael

Thanks, Michael.

I understand you are in Europe, but do you know nib master(s) in US by any chance? I am in Florida.

I recently sent a 149 to MB with a very bent nib. It also had a very badly scratched body. They repaired it, added a new body, and fully serviced it (piston) all for 88 Euros (plus outward postage). As Michael says, it depends on the condition of the rest of the pen whether MB or a nib master will be your best option.

That's news to me!

88€ is, more or less, what they charge for a "level I" service, that I was under the impression didn't cover the nib.

I had a 145 nib much more damaged than that last winter and Mark Bacas, nibgrinder.com did a fantastic job for me.

It was done under their L1 Service. If it's a fairly simple repair job then it looks like they will include it under the service, they also sorted out a bent nib on a 146 last year, also under the Service ... the nib on my 149 looked like a pair of crossed fingers behind your back.

But if the pen is otherwise fine then, as others say, Nonozon can probably get it done for less by a nib master.

H!

Would anyone know the approximate cost of a replacement nib for the 146... wanted to change mine from M to F

Thanks and blessings

Would you consider having a nib-meister re-grind your M into an F? Unless you are committed to factory-original parts, this option can be a lot cheaper, especially if you can get yourself to a pen show, where they will do it right in front of you, and you can test the nib while you're there to see if it's what you wanted; that usually costs about $60. Or you can send it to a nib-meister directly. You may be cautious about trusting your precious possession to the tender mercies of the postal service, and the cost of doing so (with insurance) will add to the total expense, but I have done so a number of times and have never had a problem. Some nib-meisters have a long waiting list, which is another reason waiting for a pen show might be better -- the pen is out of your hands only for a few minutes instead of more than a few weeks. There are a couple of good nib-meisters mentioned in this thread already, another is Gena Salorino at Custom Nib Studio.

To send your Montblanc for repair in the US now involves sending it to their new service center. They will quote you a price for a nib repair just like a nibmeister would.

To get a nib repaired by Montblanc in Europe is different. It doesn't go to the same service center and goes to Montblanc in Hamburg. From what I've read so far they don't tend to add on as many additional costs as the US service center does.

To buy a new nib and have it fitted by Montblanc Hamburg will cost a level 3 service. Their most expensive service, but that will also include the full service components from their levels 1 and 2, and they will return your original nib. In the US the service center will be adding on at least $100 if they have to send it to Hamburg.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
