Haha, I thought the Fuji one was the best-looking of the 100th Anniversary pens, and the price agreed with my assessment

That's right - they are too much Manga-like looking. I prefer more when the Bauhaus thinking of "less is more" is applied.

I agree with you about less is more. The pagoda made by Kyusai is my holy grail makie pen despite togidashi-taka maki-e only. However the value of a pen is determined by the market not a single one. The Fuji is also an exceptional makie in my opinion. I dont have any feel of manga like on the Fuji, on the contrary, I am moved every time as if I were in the mountain Fuji. Have you ever seen one carefully in person ? The Fuji almost sold out even before officially published. We will see the value in the future whether you have interest or not.

I presume it was the overwhelmingly negative comments on this thread. The few comments mentioning the Seven Gods criticise the quality and/or style of the artwork, and I don't recall any comments on the Fuji. The discussion was mostly focused on the lack of less of less expensive pens, with the Fuji and Seven Gods dismissed as hopelessly unaffordable dreams.

I note the largely negative comments (including one posted by myself for the lack of "inclusivity" on Pilot's end) regarding the whole 100th anniversary business. But inspite of the negativity, of the 100th anniversary releases to date; mjchuang9's Mount Fuji pen is the most beautiful of the pens released so far. I hope he did not interpret the lacklustre responses here as a lack of appreciation for the 100th anniversary pens, artistically speaking or potential price appreciation aside. He has my hand up as a fan for his Mount Fuji pen

Apparently, the sets are sold out and single pens are sold now for 500K Yen each - saw it today at Itoya. In the warmth, while the runners of the Tokyo marathon passing in front of Itoya had the pleasure of raining cats and dogs in temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees Celcius.

And likewise, it’s been an absolute cracker of a Summer down south with runs of 40C days here in Adelaide.

 

How do you find the 7 Gods pen in the flesh ? It wouldn’t be until April when our regional AD in Sydney takes delivery of a few of the 7 Gods.

I wouldn't spend $5000 for such a pen. Buy instead a Namiki #50 and commission e.g. a Chinkin maki-e design to a famous Japanese artist, then you also pay that sum but you get something MUCH nicer. And you have a real pen - not such a pocket pen with a Pilot #10 nib.

Getting a commissioned piece is a great idea!

 

I was disappointed when I saw the 7 gods of good fortune pieces initially. But after having a closer look and handling the pens, I realised each of the figures were very detailed. Not common to see that from other brands’ maker.

This is a great idea

But I trust that these pens will sell fairly quickly, as the novelty and pull of a 100th year anniversary piece will draw in the punters.

Thank you for sharing the two close ups Ebisu and Tamon-ten. In fact, the image of the Tamon-Ten looked "jaundiced" on the official Pilot website, where-as with your close up photos; one could appreciate the Togidashi takamaki-e work better - and Tamon-Ten looked "healthier" - for the lack of a better word.
