Sheen Vs. Shading

Hey y'all!

 

I just recently acquired a bottle of Robert Oster Blue Water Ice from Pen Chalet, nicely priced too. I was interested in such a pretty blue ink, and was surprised when I used it and there were hints of red on the edges when it dried! After some research I discovered that there's a whole world of inks out there that "Sheen" and "Shade". Now, I know that those are two different things completely, and that shimmer is also a separate entity of its own, but I came here to ask y'all what you think. Which do y'all prefer? Sheen? Or Shading?

Both as well as Shimmer! Sorry, but metallic finishes have always been a magnet for me. So it is with inks ........

I'm a shading fan.

 

Sheen tends to distract me, especially with juicy nibs. Often I catch myself thinking the ink is still wet (even if it's days later).

 

Shimmer I want nothing to do with. But I'm not a sparkle person to begin with.

Sheen all the way!!!! But I'll take an ink with both! I love to look of shimmer but in too afraid to use it in my Viscontis

It seems you are asking our preference of either sheening, shading or shimmer.

 

I like both sheening and shading. Of those two I prefer inks that shade.

 

I do not like shimmery, metallic inks. I have tried several and just don't care for them. I believe they are made for a special kind of person, of which I am not.

No preference really. I use & enjoy both inks that shade & those that sheen. I like seeing other what other folks do with shimmering inks, but when I pull out my Emerald of Chivor, I do glitter-free fills.

I somehow have in my head the association that sheeny inks are likely to smear, while shading inks don't. Perhaps I'm wrong, but for that reason alone, at this point in time (subject to change) I prefer shading inks.

Both! But since I use fine nibs and not-so-quality paper I don't see much sheen except for some inks. I love shading, especially when it's...dramatic

I like both sheen and/or shading. Some regular dyes used to make ink also naturally provide sheen.

 

Shimmer is different.

 

I use them all but I usually restrict shimmer inks to C/C filling pens for easy cleaning.

I prefer shading. Sheen is nice too, but it can get a bit distracting in some cases. Sometimes I'd rather have no shading/sheen.

Depends on the job I'm doing, signing legal documents with a shimmering ink might not go down well at work, looks good on birthday cards.

Messing about with pens and ink is fun after all.

 

If I had to choose, I'd probably go "shading".

This is in general however and depends on situation. For general use "regular" is at the top. Others mood or situation dependent.

What are your favorite inks that both sheen and shade?

The only shimmer ink I really like is Emerald of chivor, and that's only because of the non-shimmer properties like shading and sheen. Yama dori is close enough substitute though so emerald is mainly kept in storage except for special occasions.

I like shading for me. However, when I send a letter to a grandkid I want all the shimmer and sheen and whiz bang I can get. (And also Wonder Woman and shark stamps ordered today from the US Post Office!)
