For my first Robert Oster ink, I chose Astorquiza Rot - I picked it based entirely on the name (who could resist an ink with "rot" in the name?). I quite like this ink; the color is a dark red with a lot of brown. It is a little dry but still performed well. The dry time is somewhat long, and the water resistance is low. The shading is reasonably nice for a deep red & there is a halo that would probably be more evident with a flex pen. All in all, a very nice red with an interesting name.

Nice review. Especially your use of different nibs. I like it because it looks like a good replica of half-dried blood. Mmm!

I have this. Your images look browner to me than it looks in my samples, but maybe mine would look browner after some time passed.

It is definitely red, although a brownish-red. I did the writing about 3 weeks ago, so it's had some time to dry but not too much. No matter how hard I try, I do think the images lose something in translation between the scan, my computer, and the upload.

Thanks for the lovely review! I like the color a lot, but the dryness makes me nervous...

It's only a tiny bit dry. If I used a 1-5 scale (with 1 being the driest and 5 being the wettest), it would be about a 2.3 to 2.5. Just slightly below average. Since I generally use F or EF nibs, I tend to be sensitive to dryness because of the inherent feedback of the nib. I did use it in a Vanishing Point EF, and there wasn't anymore feedback than normal with it.

Wonderful review, thank you. However it's not my kind of colour. For me it's more brown than red. Sorry Cyber6 (after whom this ink is named).

 

 

No need to be sorry. I like them "blood-type"... :puddle: ... and I am sure some other fantastic weirdos like me like it too... :lol: :lol:

 

Funny story... while filling a pen, I happen to spill a few drops on my desk (office)... I quickly wiped the drops with a kleenex... Dude, it look sooo much like blood, people kept asking me if I hurt myself. :lticaptd:

 

 

On a side note, I do not have Sailor Red-Brown, but I have been told that this is a very close doppelganger of that famous ink (discontinued by Sailor and with no apparent indication of ever coming back) ;)

Is there a fair comparison between this ink and Noodlers "Black Swans in English Roses", or Diamine Oxblood? Those are the two that sit at the front of my red/brown galaxy. I really enjoy Robert's inks, but I'm at a point where I don't want to have too much duplication.

Oh no... Oxblood is much more red and English roses is just a pale brown in comparison to Astorquiza Rot.

 

A closer color is MB Hitchcock .. ;)

I don't have Oxblood, but I do have a sample of Black Swan in English Roses. I'll try to get a quick comparison of Astorquiza Rot and BWER later today.

Wonderfil handwriting and the review is excellent. Continue like this and you'll get to my Top 3 od ink reviewers :) As for the color I'm noty sure if I would enjoy it but I will try it when the chance arises.

Excellent review, thank you for sharing it with us. I also like the colour - like you stated on the edge between red and brown. I've only tried a few RO inks myself, but noticed that Robert is a master in creating ambiguous inks that live on the border between colours. In my opinion, that's one of the things that makes them interesting.

Here is a comparison between Black Swan in English Roses and Astorquiza Rot. For the swatches, I did a single pass and then a second pass over half of the first one.

The RO is much redder, and the BSER seems to have an orangish tending undertone to the red in the brown (I'm not sure if that makes sense to anyone other than me). Probably a better way to say it is that the RO has more of a blue-red base with strong brown accents while the BSER has a brown base with an orange-red accent. Seeing them side by side, the RO is definitely red and not brown, so doing the comparison made up my mind on that score at least. :)

Okay, okay, I'm not sorry at all. I am thankful to you that I now need another two bottles of inks. (One of each.) My bottle of BSER is just about empty.

Thank you so much for doing this - it got me to finally dip-testing my - so far unopened - bottle of BSER and I found that indeed, I love it! I will soon fill up a pen to use it in...

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
