No Serial Number On My 149?

Recommended Posts

I need some help. I have purchased a 149 on eBay. Upon receiving it, I noticed it doesn't have a serial number on the clip and no pix on the underside. Just has W. Germany on it. Going by the 149 chart, it looks to be from late 80's early 90's. Split ebonite feed, 14k bi colour nib, 2 section barrel and brass threads.

i've included some pics. Do montblanc 149 always have have numbers?

No, those pens made before 1991 don't have serial numbers or Pix.

Great, thanks for the reply. There were many sources saying this needs a serial number, I guess that should be included in the chart?

I guess it isn't there because it's not only 149 pens that it applies to. Montblanc only started putting serial numbers on all of their pens in 1991

Oh boy, the serial number thing again.... Sometimes they put one on the clip ring sometimes they didn't.

It's nice to have, but really a moot point in that there is no cross reference record of what pen got what serial number. It's just a number.

And to top that. Another model could have the same serial number as your 149, They used these numbers over again.

So don't sweat the serial numbers unless you are using it in combination with other identifying markings on the clip, cap ring, nib, feed, one part, two part bodies, the list goes on. The trick is to assemble enough markings that together you paint a complete picture so you can date your pen, or tell if it's had a nib replaced etc. Proving it Genuine can be determined pretty quick. This other stuff is really fluff for us pen nutz.

Mine seems to be from the 70s and has a serial number...🤔

Replacement clip, either from MB or someone swapped it.

I have a similar example, W-Germany stamped, no serial, split ebonite feed and 14k bi-colour nib - writes better then my Platinum 149 which was purchased new, last year!

Looks like a split ebonite feed and two part barrel, 14k nib, brass threads. I agree, 90's, and a nice looking pen. Good luck with it.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
