Irori - Sailor Jentle Ink (2016)

In 1911, Mr. Kyugoro Sakata, an engineer from Hiroshima in Japan, was introduced to the fountain pen. Mr. Sakata was so intrigued by the design and function of the pen he decided to begin a company to craft the finest writing instruments in the world. In honor of his British friend, he chose to name the company Sailor Pen.




The Sailor Pen Company has maintained this heritage of quality and technical perfection over the years. Apart from offering very well made pens, the company has employed an ink master - pure genius who's managed to create greates fountain pen inks ever (it's my opinion not validated by research but shared by many of us). I would guess that during the years Sailor created approximately 600-800 inks (most of them under other names).

One of internatioonally available line of Sailor inks is Sailor Jentle line. At the moment we have two of them. The new one reintroduces colors that were missed by hundreds of geeks. I'vwe bought full line of new Jentle inks and I'll review them all in following weeks. The inks are:




  1. Chu-shu
  2. Fuji-musume
  3. Irori
  4. Kin-mokusei
  5. Rikyu-cha
  6. Sakura-mori
  7. Waka-uguisu
  8. Yuki-akari

The color is strong, vibrant and saturated. The ink behaves well on variety of papers. It has no water resistance. I haven't observed any feathering or bleedthrough.

This appears to skirt the edge of being an orangey red without crossing it, and an ink I might try.

I wished my Irori was the color I see on my screen.... :(

 

I find my Irori leans too orange... I am ok with orangey-reds, but not so with red-orangey... if you can follow that. :P :P

 

 

Maybe I need to put it on a real wet broad nib.... is currently on a medium flow, medium nib.

Thanks for another thorough review, vis. As I commented on lgsoltek's review, I will likely buy this even though it's brighter than I usually like my reds. Yet I don't think it's the brightness that's bothering me; comparing both reviews, it just seems there's something slightly 'off' about the color and I can't quite put my finger on it. The color range shows little spread and shading is minimal but that doesn't bother me with other inks so I don't think that's it. Just something odd about it.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Sometimes when I see this ink, I get tempted to buy a bottle. Next time I see it, it's more a "meh" feeling...

Can't make up my mind...

It seems Diamine Wild Strawberry and Sailor Irori are almost twins:

 

I think Diamine Poppy Red is also very close to Irori, probably closer than Wild Strawberry. I had Poppy Red and Irori loaded up about a month ago (albeit in different pens) and I couldn't split them.

Thanks for the review! There is something very unique about Irori's color: one day I think it's pure red, red with some orange the next day, then red with some pink the day after.

 

One thing I do know for certain is that I will buy a bottle of Irori when my sample runs out! That might take a while though, given how rarely I use red inks...

I used to love this ink way-back-when. Now I've stocked up on the new release, I can't stand it; such an insipid shade, almost translucent with absolutely no depth or body.

 

Such a shame, especially when compared to other Sailor reds such as Kobe 27, Oku Yama or Grenade....

Too many pens; too little writing.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
