Montblanc Lucky Orange, Quick Look

It's neon!

Sorry for the reverse image and the poor photo, but loading large images here is impossible.

Let's get down to brass tacks: I love orange inks and have Pelikan Edelstein Mandarin, Noodler's Apache Sunset, Habanero, Diamine Orange, Blaze Orange, Pumpkin, Bungbox Fresh Oranges....to name but a few. There is nothing like this Montblanc ink.

I must confess, I didn't have high hopes. I thought it might be nice, but I wasn't expecting anything quite as daring as this. Usually Montblanc inks are fairly conservative, but nice. Not this one. This is an in your face, retina searing, neon orange ink. It is bright!

It shades to quite a warm orange, but has a peculiar pink/red tone which gives it a richness and a good saturation to make it an easy ink to use and read what you've written. Some orange inks aren't always that easy to read due to a lightness or a delicateness that isn't always useful. This has a nice heavy saturation and flows well and has really excellent lubrication. I saw no signs of feathering or bleed through or show through. It shades nicely to a warm orange colour which you can sort of make out in the smear in the pic above.

Two issues:

1. That small cube bottle is beautiful, but it is never enough. I know that before the end of January I will have used up all this ink and will need more, but sadly this is an LE.

2. The dry time will be enough to put some off. 45 seconds. Yep, that's right, a 45 second dry time!

Overall, I like it a lot. One of the better orange inks I own. Feels more like a Noodler's ink than a Montblanc ink. Well behaved until you get to the dry time, but I think I'll cope.

Interesting! I bought it two days ago and haven't even yet had the time to try it out. I'm glad it's a warm orange. I also see the deepness in it, like Apache Sunset. Hard too describe . How about simply "It's more than just an orange?"

Reminds me of my alma mater's colors (University of Illinois) so I'm a fan. I don't have the chance to use orange inks as much as I'd like, but enjoy writing letters with them. Haven't settled on one to purchase a full bottle of yet though...

I quite like it but find it strangely flat. I call it a "plastic orange", a bit like Omas Orange. It's a slightly richer shade though. I put it next to the Omas in this pic.

Thanks...too late now. But an orange is once a year or two ink.

Is this ink new?

Mr Fritz Schimpf introduced it here on November 17 in "The Mall," as in stock @ his site, along with the MB ink for the Miles Davis pen.

It was mentioned briefly on February 11, 2016, when "Eclectic Collector," announced he was deleting his post mentioning the MB special edition inks for 2016. That was the first mention here of the ink referenced by name, "Lucky Orange," & according to the then released Montblanc catalogue, it would be released in December 2016.

I have a little square bottle of MB Ink of Joy from 2011 (?). The bottom of the bottle says Encre Orange, made in Austria and expiration date of April 16 (but I ignore the expiration dates).

I wonder if that is the same ink reissued under another name?

What a coincidence! I just filled a pen with this ink before I saw this post. I hadn't touched the bottle in ages because I rarely use orange ink.

  • 3 months later...

Well, wife bought it...blind at my B&M.

My bottle is on the darker side of orange. It does shade, but not much and that is on real good 170g Gmund paper. On normal 90g laser...no shading. In my bottle is not to neon, the ink could be written with....outside of Halloween.

I am going to my B&M next week I hope to pick up Edelstein Smoky Quartz....and I've not changed my mind to buy some Kaweco Orange.

Top ink Golden Yellow it too darker than what others claim. Shades well.

Dirty pen for the Yellow...could be for the orange too.....first time for anything....

Second Ink.

Mb Ink of Joy was a different orange ink.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
