Is This A Fake ?

My cousin purchased this Waterman fountain pen, which from the style looks like a hemisphere. On further inspection, it appears to me to be a really good replica. I've come to this decision as there were a few differences to my hemisphere. I would really like to establish if this is a replica, or an older style of the hemisphere.

And, what are the differences you have discerned?

Apart from the engraving style of the nib, which has changed a bit over the years?

It looks reasonably OK to me. Also considering that most of these pens are lacquered metal which is decidedly more difficult to fake than the plastic Lamy Safaris...

That's true, however there is one very distinctive difference, and that is that on my hemisphere there's a silver ring round the barrel which has things (which I can't remember) written on it. This ring is a lot bigger than the one already on it, and looks a lot more professional and exquisite.

Was it bought 'new' from a 'retail store'?

Or from a "trade route of lesser recourse" priced "suspiciously cheap"? ;)

The pen shown above is a Series 1 which has a thinner collar on the nib section grip. Note: There is no collar on the barrel.

You most probably have the Series 2 model.

Take a wander here.

  • 4 weeks later...

I wouldn't imagine there would be much for a forger to gain by reproducing a pen that appeals to a small group of collectors, when he can sell bogus Mont Blancs much more easily.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
