Engrave Or Not To Engrave?

I have a pen engraved with my father's name that he was given as a graduation present, and one with my grandfather's initials as well that my grandfather and grandmother used. They are not Montblanc pens. What I don't have are any pens with my name on them. I have three Montblanc pens of black resin and while I find them to be very nice pens, I will not be getting them engraved, not because of any possible reduction in value and plan for resale, but because I agree that they would likely not look particularly good engraved. What I believe would be nice is if Montblanc decided to produce a pen with a cap band that was designed to accept engraving or produced a pen that is not a limited edition and thus which is more affordable out of a material other than black resin which might look nice engraved.

I thought Pen Nut's story quite touching, a lovely example of how engraving on such an object can be so meaningful.

 

When I was collecting pens, I certainly avoided any fountain pen with any form of personalisation, despite them always being offered cheaper. However, just like Azuniga, I did once need one last particular pen to complete one of my collections and as such, and given the small unfilled logo engraved on the cap of this black pen, I reluctantly bought it. However, I admit that, as small as the logo is, it still does and always has irritated me that the pen is marked/tattooed!

 

I certainly have no problem with someone wanting to have their fountain pen engraved, and I wouldn't actually have any issue owning engraved ballpoints or pencils, though I would choose company names or advertising over someone's name (unless historically famous). Of course, Sasha Royale is quite right when saying..... if engraving is going to add to the enjoyment of your pen.......

 

I wouldn't want any of my fountain pens engraved, not on the body or cap of the pen. However, I did choose to have this modern MB 149 nib of mine engraved, on both shoulders, by Montblanc when they made this personalised nib made for me.

 

 

 

Whilst I now think I ought to have put 'Pavoni' on the other side, I ended up putting my real name there. Satisfyingly, it is the very last place anyone would ever look and in any event, the engraving is far too small to be noticed, unless..........nah, I know my secret is safe with you guys

Totally agree. If I lose affection for that pen, I'm still glad to have at least used or have owned it.

Please engrave!

 

Many of my best buys have been because they were engraved. I get to try out pens I would not otherwise buy and can be very reassure that the price is pretty much what I will get if I on sold it.

Like Oliver the mb146 I got for less than the price of a basic mb service below this thread And my personal favourites are when the pen has a name on it and the seller prices it accordingly eg Stella Geha etc.

PS I finally got my Stella - listed as "an old German pen with name engraved on it" for one dollar postage cost more!
