Engrave Or Not To Engrave?

Very sorry if this has been asked before. I did search to about page 8 or maybe 9 but couldn't find anything related.

 

If one gets their Mb engraved, does the cost of the pen drop quite a lot because it has been personalized or does it give the pen a sense of history? Is there anyother pros and cons about getting it done?

In the last number published of the Fountain Pen Journal (www.fountainpenjournal.com) there is an interesting article about the subject...

 

Maybe more than half of the collectors do not like a name engraved pen, others –it is my case– we can appreciate those names as it is part of 'collecting pens'. It is not as usual today that people engrave their pens as it used to be. It is true, though, that pens with an owner name are cheaper, but all depends on the pen... when they are rare and your collection is missing that particular one, the engraving is irrelevant...

 

I was looking for a Coral Red Soennecken Rheingold, very hard to find, when finally i found one it had a horrible engraving from a ship company, so large that it was disgusting but that pen allowed me to complete all the colors and it was cheaper...

Are you in the market for one and it has engraving? If so, it's an aesthetic matter that only you can decide. If you have one and you're considering engraving, it depends on: 1) whether you going to keep it "forever" and, 2) if you're planning on (or at least considering) selling it later on. If the former, I'd do it (and I have done so) for a pen I'm never going to part with. If the latter, it might lower the sales price a bit or restrict the potential number of buyers, but pens are not a good investment anyway.

The Obama inauguration commemorative 149 is engraved with "Yes we can!" I am sure you can add your own message. People have even done maki-e on 149s. Lots of ways to jazz one up.

I am a spectacle about getting it done, mainly because the dealer, the only dealer within 50 miles charges £40.00 for the engraving. Can 'you' send a email to Montblanc directly and get the engraving done by them? If so would it cost?

I had both my Meisterstück 161 ballpoint and my wife's 164 90th anniversary ballpoint engraved with our names and the year we got married. It's just to commemorate our marriage so no intention on selling at all. This just adds a special touch to our pens.

That's so cool. The last thread with the same subject resulted in the general consensus NOT to engrave

 

If it's a pen you'll never consider selling, go for it. Otherwise, I believe it makes the pen un-sellable in the future killing its value.

It's a matter of personal taste. I personally would never engrave one of my pens - it seems quite "cheap" to me, making the pen look like a simil-Montblanc pen, the one you find in your hotel room. But again: de gustibus...

Ok my local MB boutique here in Singapore has this policy on engravings. Pen purchase within the two years warranty, engraving is free, else it will cost around S$70-$80 (£35-£40) and S$130 (£66) to re-engrave/change engraving.

My late wife gave me an MB FP and Rollerball for my birthday in 2007. I had them engraved with slightly different takes on my name so I could tell the difference in the two pen pouch that I use to carry them. I never intend to get rid of them as

they are a remembrance of a wonderful woman. They are the only pens that I have that are engraved and I have 50 as of today

I engraved my Hemingway. At the time, 1) selling any if my pens was a foreign concept, and 3) I believed I would be married forever.

 

I had the pen for more than 20 years (far longer than the marriage lasted) before selling it last year - with papers but no box. The pen went to a good home, and I feel fine.

 

So, you know, you can play it safe or you can take your chances.

 

I don't buy pens for possible future owners.

Well, it is not a MB but nevertheless it is about engaving....

Though I have my initials on all my shirts with no exception whatsoever, I don't feel the need for having my name on a pen cap or on the back of a watch. It just doesn't speak to me.

 

So no I would not engrave any of my pens and that's all there is to it for me at least.
