Montblanc 84

Hi All,

I originally posted this in the Repairs Forum, but think I would have had more luck here, so apologies for the duplicate post.

I picked up an 84 a few weeks back and the piston was stuck solid. I soaked it, stripped it and it works beautifully now, the only problem is that there is now a small gap between the barrel and turning knob. I've taken it apart, tried everything I can think of, I've even gently pushed the piston as far up the barrel that it'll go, reinserted the threaded whotsit into the piston end, close it (drawing the piston back up) but the gap is still there ... what am I doing wrong?

The 84 has a press fit filler? how did you get it out?

once you have the filler out of the barrel, assemble the piston mechanism outside the pen and retract the piston fully (which means drw the piston up fully) with this you can check that the knob does close fully when the piston is fully retracted,. if not then readjust the piston stroke. Once this is satisfactory, with the piston fully retracted and piston seal greased, push the assembly back into the barrel, fully.

Hello hari317,

Work has kept me busy and I've just returned to this project. I didn't actually remove the piston section, just the helix attached to the turning knob. The photo shows all that was disassembled. I'm not quite sure how to remove the piston mechanism from this model .... 146s and 149s very simple, but this has me scratching my head, And again, no matter what I do I still end up with that gap in picture 2.

Any advice will be more than gratefully accepted.

You can heat the body of the pen for about 3 minutes and then push it out from the inside. At least that's what I did for my 12, 14 and 22. I just used a hairdryer to get the job done. Just make sure to keep turning the body of the pen so the heat is applied evenly.

Hi Chunya, just a word of warning, be careful in the manner you push the inner sleeve out. From memory the only way to push the sleeve out is by applying pressure upon the end of the piston. You can easily damage the piston seal and the hollow piston rod. Make sure what ever you use to knock out the inner sleeve is the exact size of the barrel opening, otherwise you will end up splitting the seal and the piston rod. Some inner sleeves push out quite easily and some are a very tight fit.

Good luck

@chunya where you able to advance in this? I have exactly the same situation with a Montblanc 84 and can't find lots of information about it. :(

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
