Diamine Blue Velvet - Penman Sapphire Alternative?

a.zy.lee

Recommended Posts

I have used neither inks, but from the samples I've seen online, Diamine Blue Velvet looks either like a dull-dark-purplish-blue, or the perfect alternative to Parker Penman Sapphire.

Have you used either of these inks? How do they compare?

What does your bottle of Blue Velvet look like?

To me Penman Sapphire is the best of the greenish blues, not sure why purple blues are recommended by ink users to replace it...

As one down to his last few bottles of Penman Sapphire, my anxious soul is appeased by the following inks:

PR DC Supershow Blue, or American Blue

Noodler's American Eel Blue

Diamine Sapphire Blue

I know it's not the same, but it does the trick. I often don't have the mental energy to fret about not matching the great Penman Sapphire.

I don't know what ink you're using that's greenish-blue, but I think there's a 99.9% chance it's not Penman Sapphire. The PS sample above came from a cartridge (so there's no question of the provenance). My remaining bottle of PS is the same color. It runs from a sky blue to deep indigo with a red sheen.

All 12 bottles of Penman Sapphire used have been a greenish blue, but that was purchased in the 70s and 80s.

Not sure what other formulations look like.

How vibrant is American Blue? Is it a good shader?

I have Electric DC Blue which has zero shading. I'm worried they're too similar.

Alongside each other, my Parker Sapphire has a half a tick of green whereas Diamine's Blue Velvet has the same plus a quarter of a tick of red. Don't know if that's in fact possible but it's still the way I see it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Opened a book that had Penman Sapphire underlining and margin jotting from the 1990s, it's clearly a green blue from a bold nib. Some pens can open up the colour to make a purple into a green tinge, best noticed when an Herbin is allowed to "breathe".

This review also gives me a clearly greenish edge to Penman Sapphire.

There can be hassles over green or purple, I guess this will be another one.... :D

I've been using Blue Velvet for a couple of weeks now and it is definitely a favorite. I'm going to have to get a few more bottles. This is the first ink ever I've actually wished they sold in big bottles.

It's been a while since I've seen PPS in person, but it's pretty close. It is a rich, dark blue. It may be a hair redder than Sapphire, but it's not a purple blue. It's gorgeous.

I only have a case or so left of PPS in my ink cave. So it is time to find a substitute. I will have to compare these.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
