Well, in German the material is called "Edelstahl" - with "stahl" meaning steel and "edel" meaning precious, noble or kingly: "royal" in other words. The name was created 1911 in an era that liked romantic names (just like "precious resin" which is a literally translation from "Edelharz").

 

In fact they could just have called it stainless steel, but punching it into a Google Translator or something of that sort is so much more fun for the marketing guys!

Sorry, but the "Royal" denotes the use of diamonds just like on other Montblanc "Royal" pens and not the use of stainless steel as the pen's main material. Therefore it's not a bad translation of the German word "Edelstahl" for stainless steel.

 

Also it's the diamonds which rise the price that much.

Still I would have expected a different word order. The way it is named I get the impression (and it seems I was not the only one) that "royal" connects to "steel" and not to pen/Montblanc as an indicator for series.

So I still smile about it...

As a person who does not see the point of having a pen that does not get used.... I use all my pens, even special ones.

 

Imagine losing or misplacing one of these.... or if a coworker walks away with it. lol.

 

I had a fit when I misplaced my $250 Parker Sonnet silver ciselle pen, although I think it was the cat that knocked it into the garbage can.... I would lose it if it was one of these.
