Just noticed this new Nakaya FP while browsing FPGeeks; more information can be had here at nibs.com.

It looks quite different than Nakaya's other offerings, but I'm really not sure I like the 'bamboo-wrapped urushi pen' idea...

OTOH, the indigo blue color they're using for this pen is really nice IMHO!

Yeah I saw this last week and thought it looked... strange. But well, Nakaya produces so many beautiful pens I guess they could afford one that's not (in my eyes) beautiful.

Wha--? What?!

I had to re-read the thread title.

Wow. That's different.

Huh.

I don't know if I like it or not. (Laughing.) It's certainly not what I pictured when I opened the thread.

P.S. Okay, I've looked at it again. I kindv like it. It's different. It's interesting. Yeah. I haven't clicked on the links yet, but just from the photos, yeah, I like it.

P.P.S. Now that I've read the linked articles, I still like it, but I'm glad I don't want one. $1800. Yeah, no. *Hugs my Piccolos*

maybe I'm the weirdo around here, but I liked it straight away. The blue one that is. I can't imagine loving it for many years, maybe I'd prefer to look at it once a month or so. But yes, I like it. If only it were at € 25 :D

The pen might be very hard to clean after extensive use. Just like the Montblanc POA Louis XIV.

Iy would be much better if the bamboo don't have overlapping.

Yeah I saw it when they first posted it. There's something very reminiscent of a renaissance thing, but it sure isn't minimal. I'm sure it has a lot of cultural significance, just not sure about the pen as a writing instrument. Part of me goes uhhhhh and part goes I kind of like it. But at 1800 there are a lot of Nakaya's I like a lot more.

I agree that the cleaning of the pen cap and barrel will probably be an issue in the future - there are so many nooks and crannies where dirt could accumulate.

Otherwise it's a beautiful design, but $1800??? There are other pens which appeal to me in this price range, and another Nakaya isn't on the horizon.

I'm wondering if the purpose of the bamboo mesh is to allow the urushi to discolor over time in this pattern? IOW, the urushi that's covered will stay darker than the uncovered urushi parts over time. At some point, you might want to take off the mesh because the pen's urushi has taken on the pattern itself.

Still, there's a lot (and I mean, A LOT) of other pens I could get for $1800...

I like it a lot, probably for the nostalgia factor because my family had a lot of (now long-gone) rattan furniture woven in that pattern. But as to whether I $1800-like it...

... sorry, it looks like a bad kit pen, even if it does have a Nakaya nib...

I dont see the hand works being special enough to justify such price.

Maybe their inspiration came from this?

  • 2 weeks later...

I had seen this pen previously and did not like it at the time. However, I wanted to wait a bit before writing anything in case that opinion changed. Alas, it has not. The design does not hit home for me and I wonder if the subtly raised bamboo might bother the skin on the hand with extensive writing. This is my least favorite Nakaya design.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
