Rhodium Trim 149... A Sneak Preview!

Hello All,

I hope you're having a great week. I'll be posting up full details later, but I'm pleased to say that the 149 is being serviced (by my preferred specialist) and re-assembled as we speak. Its an early 1990's version with the plastic feed and a lovely fine nib which has been 'tuned' by John Sorowka.

Apologies for the quality of the image, it was snapped very quickly on my iphone this morning.

Hi Opooh,

No, the nib is being left as is on this one. To be honest there's a good chance I'll move it on as I wanted to ensure that the results were as I expected them to be.

I have a preference for broad nibs on 149's and so the 'keeper' will be probably be a rhodium version with that nib.

It does look wonderful!

hi Roy

Looks nice, a MB149 looks great with the white metal.

Thinking of having my 149 (with BB nib ;) ) rhodinized.

Nice. I like the rhodium 149, I can perform this service too. It's a shame that mb does not have this pen in their collection too.

Here are some examples from my ''custom 149 nib book"

Enjoy.

hi Lennard

Never before saw so many transformations of the well known nib. Some are very interesting ;)

How is this performed?

Do you disassemble the pen?

Is all of the nib treated or just the front?

Very Interesting indeed.

Are the components 'tank' plated, or are they electroplated using a plating 'wand' (pen plating system).

All metallic parts can be dis-assembled from precious resin body, apart from the three cap bands. Would this mean that both wand and tank processes have to be employed?

Michael.

Hi,

The body parts are all tank plated. The nib can be tank plated too if it is in full rhodium. To apply the nib details it is easier to use a pen plater. All parts are professionally plated by a goldsmith so everything is ultrasonic cleaned, electro degreased and polished before plating.

All parts are dismantled except for the cap rings.

The pen are polished and serviced too before assembling.

It is a time consuming job to do this modification properly but the result is very nice.

Hi,

The pen is completely dismantled and The complete nib is treated. I also plate the underside of the nib.

As promised :-) Apologies that they're only iPhone ones!! I have to say it's an incredibly handsome beast of a pen.

It's up for sale! Although I keep just staring at it, so I'll have to bring myself to send it out to the lucky new owner!

  • 4 weeks later...

Now this has got me jealous and wanting to have a much loved 146 spruced up. Anyone want to direct me to where I could find more details? Please :-)

All the Best!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
