Possible To Remove A Montblanc 32 Piston Myself?

Vamino

Recommended Posts

I just got myself a Montblanc 32 in very nice condition that I am in the process of cleaning up (dried link inside, that sort of thing), and have discovered that there appears to be ink/water behind the piston seal.

I was wondering if it's possible for me to remove the piston myself without damaging anything? Ideally without having to buy a specialist tool. It'd be nice to just get back there, give the pen a good proper clean and apply some silicone grease so it operates a bit more smoothly and hopefully I won't have to worry about it after that.

Thanks very much for any help.

Hi

I am not totally sure but I think I read somewhere that the piston unit screws into the barrel on the 32 unlike on the 12 & 22 where its a press fit.

Unscrew the filler nob, can you see two flats for a spanner to fit.

I just received a Montblanc 34 I bought off of ebay. The seller said the helix piston comes all of the way out but he thought it could be fixed. When I unscrewed the blind camp completely, the piston does indeed come out completely and what I believe is the seal at the end is still lodged inside of the section. Here's the odd part: The pen takes up ink perfectly, doesn't leak and writes beautifully. Do I mess with it or leave it as is?

Hi

I would just lube the piston and screw it back together again, making sure it's done up tight enough so it does not accidentally undo again when the filling knob is turned, there should be a defined stop as the knob is unscrewed as the piston is fully extended, trying to force it my well either brake something or for the piston assembly to unscrew itself.

Thanks for the help everyone. The piston was indeed just press fit in there and I managed to take that off. I fear I may have done some damage to something in the process though, unfortunately. After giving it a good clean and reassembling, the piston is no longer working for me. The only thing I can see as the issue is the threads that go up into the blind cap rotate freely where I am assuming they should be turning with the cap, though I'm obviously not sure. That video was a great help, and from what I can see of it the white thread section there seems to have some movement (it doesn't stick straight out when removed) though there's not enough detail for me to see if it rotates like mine.

Rather frustrating and I'm at a bit of a loss for what to do now.

Mb 12 Piston Advice Needed

Started by Bananabender, Mar 07 2014 19:30

The guy is a magician and the pneumatic noise is intimidating. Sheesh. I don't stand a chance. I still can't figure out how he gets the piston out. I have the barrel and section and the only thing I've been able to do is unscrew the blind cap. What else comes apart (without breaking it)? Maybe the 34 doesn't come apart like this 22?

Hi

I am still thinking the 32 unscrews and the 22 is a press/shrink fit.

Can anyone confirm this.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
