Mb Pen Polishing Recommendations

Hi folks,

In many of the photos of MBs, the pen has a very glossy shine to it. What polishing products do you use to get that shiny pen? I've tried Semichrome and Wenol products but they don't seem to really do much.

Thanks,

Ed

I tried Simchrome, and it did not do anything.

My modern 149s get the most use. If they pick up light scratches, I do not really care anymore. Worse case scenario, send to MB for replacement of resin parts if it ever gets that bad. A convenient perk of using modern pens.

Or send back to MB for any other repair. When my old Generation needed a new end cap last summer, they sent the pen back polished to a high shine and re-did my initials in gold, also appeared to have tweaked the nib into better response. Yes, the repair price seemed high for glueing on a new end cap, but I felt better about it when I saw what all else they did at the same time.

I would strongly recommend you to stay away from metal polishes or any other automotive oriented waxes, polishes etc on pens. They may be harsh to resin surfaces and being abbrassive they may remove plating from trims.

I will recommend you a magic potion. Planet Waves Restore Guitar Polish. I had it for the direct purpose, to restore finish on my electric guitar. But one day I tried it to remove a scratch from my formerly owned 163 rollerball and it provided fantastic results. It really removes swirl marks and minor scratches. But try to avoid from any metal trims although it will not harm. Use mainly on plastic surfaces or resin. Apply a small amount of cream polish on the surface, rub the surface with your finger letting the cream do its job, wipe and buff with soft cotton cloth or cotton pads. Repeat if necessary.

As for all similar products, as a preliminary caution, you would better try a small amount first. If you feel confident and pleased, go further. This bottle should be more than enough for a lifetime.

Unfortunately, Montblanc did not polish the pen I had sent in for repair. I used Novus polish and it worked amazingly well.

Hi folks,

Thanks for all the suggestions to date. MI'm not trying to polish out a lot of deep scratches, I'm looking more for a light polish that cleans the oils and other surface dirt and adds a bit of a shine to it. It's sort of like when you put Armor-all on you car's tires after you wash it.

Thanks,

Ed

A few years ago a forum member developed a scratch remover/ polishing kit called Master Brand. The formula consisted of 2 non abrasive compounds. There are many old threads on restoration of damaged pens using this product. I bought a kit and not only did it remove all scratches and dings but it also polished the resin to a factory finish. I'm not aware whether it's still available but it's worth to give it a try and find out. The contact information of the seller/ manufacturer is included at the end of the you tube infomercial in the first link. You might want to try and contact him.

One really easy thing you can do is to practice on a cheap black pen. The member that said avoid automotive polishes is correct. Polishes tend to more abrasive and may cause more trouble. A water Bourne spray wax would be okay. Just don't use a petroleum based product. Turtle wax ICE would work just fine for this

I bought the same stuff, and didn't notice any difference in shine or scratch removal.

I thought it worked wonderflly well. Used it last night on an MB 146 and a vintage Parker Challenger and they both look like different pens.

And big plus one on anything petrolium based. Stay away.

It may discolor a celluloid pen.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
