I bit the bullet and ordered (from nibs.com, of course): Portable writer, Kuro, Soft Medium. Now comes the wait until it's shipped and arrives in Australia! Can hardly wait!

If they have one in stock then it's all down to the post offices. Good luck. I know the waiting time and have spent too many hours tracking packages from Nibs.com.

I ordered from stock and it's been shipped. I'm not sure there'll be anything much to track once it leaves the USA. I've been wanting a Nakaya for a few years, so a little more waiting time isn't too much to bear.

I am really on the verge of ordering this handsome Naka-ai Heki-tamenuri with a soft medium nib. The only thing stopping me is... to clip or not to clip? I simply cannot decide. Any help from experienced 'Nakaya-ians'?

I love the uninterrupted organic beauty of my clipless Naka-ai. But on the first day of owning it, it did roll off my table and sustain a slight blemish to its beautiful urushi finish. That said, I would still buy the cigar version because I don't need a clip for transportation and I just love the sculptural beauty of the unadorned pen.

Actually, those are exactly among my foremost concerns....Sorry to hear about your blemished beauty.

Personally, I'm not a pen case person so if it's not clipped to my pocket it's not taken out and about with me. Hence all my clipless pens do not leave my desk. My incoming Nakaya will have a clip and I have sold all but one of the clipless ones I owned.

And blemishes will happen - it's all part of the ownership experience. I dropped my $3k camera last week and felt quite a sense of relief now that it's scratched - no need to worry about babying and more attention focused on the job at hand.

I somehow flung my Desk Pen, uncapped, across the room where it landed on the hardwood floor. I was so surprised, horrified, that I couldn't move for a moment as my mind tried to accept what I'd just done. When I picked up the pen, I was very relieved to see that the pen had not landed on the nib. Whew! I examined the pen for landing marks. There was none.

I KNOW, RIGHT?!

I've had a solid black Piccolo Cigar for several years, in frequent rotation for the past couple of years, and there are micro marks of use, very, very minor, and I find them somehow satisfying, as proof that the pen is well-used.

As for clip or no clip, I have eight Nakayas and only one has a clip. I use cases as I seldom have pockets. And when I do have pockets (say on a long sweater), the sweater can swing around when I move and the pen in the pocket bang against furniture and door jambs. Y,ah,MMV.

My Nakaya has landed! A portable writer in Kuro-tamenuri with a soft medium nib. I really love the look and feel of the pen. The nib - meh! It's not for me, I'm sad to say. It makes my already awful handwriting look like a dog's breakfast!

Luckily I got it at nibs.com. I can exchange the nib. The question is, what do I exchange it for? I've asked John some questions. And based on his answers, I'll make a decision. It will be very hard to part with the pen to have the nib exchanged. I've been admiring it all day! And it will be a bit if a wait from Australia back to the USA and back again. At least I can keep the Iroshizuku Ina-ho ink that was shipped as well. That's truly lovely!

Sadly, nothing I'm doing is making the nib play nice for me. The fabulous people and great service at nibs.com will see me right with a different nib. So that's what I have to do.

The medium soft nib takes some time to get use to, especially if you have been writing with firm nibs. My medium soft nib writes like a paintbrush. The softer nibs take a lighter hand for smoothness. You will definitely want to go for a firm nib, if you do not like the medium soft.

I have a Nakaya firm fine that I enjoy using. It has a different feel than my Nakaya medium soft and fine soft nibs.

If it was me, I would take three days and only write with the Nakaya. You may find that you like the nib after getting use to it. I find the medium soft nibs have character to them. It may save you the time of sending the pen back. Try to make sure that you are using a lighter up stroke with the nib.

Aloha, aka Nakaya Naka-ai alakalaka!

The only part that gets a frowny face is the customs charge, but the rest is all akanakayanakaaiakanakaai!

My Nakaya has landed!

YAY!

The nib - meh! It's not for me, I'm sad to say.

BOOOOOO!

But, you know, this is exactly my first experience with Nakaya.

And now, I'm penduluming between wanting to swap out my aka Naka-ai's standard M nib for a ruthenium-plated M or F. But that's cos I know I love the Ru nibs. When I don't think about those other nibs, I kindv like the standard M just fine. I certainly very much like the standard M on my Piccolo Cigar. So.

BUT... I'm also much closer to nibs.com. ARGH!

I feel your pain.

I have to say that the customer service at nibs.com is outstanding! They responded right away and gave me some advice. Still don't like the nib and I am probably going to have it swapped and likely customised. I have to send some writing samples of nibs I like and point out the bits I really like. I don't think I'll ever be a soft-medium. I think I'd prefer something between an M and F and I might even go a bit stub... maybe.... maybe not.

It's definitely the 'soft' part of soft-medium that is the problem. For me, uncoordinated as I am, with awful handwriting, it's a bit like trying to write on the surface of a waterbed (if that's an analogy anyone can relate to). But it's also the width of the nib - a little too wide for me. I don't yet know if it will be narrower if the 'soft' is not in a 'medium'. And it's scratchy, which is definitely the 'soft' again. I have some Sailors, a Pilot and several cheap Chinese FPs that are way smoother. The only thing the 'soft' does is make the Iroshizuku ink I have in it, interesting shades, but mostly I write too small for that to be a huge feature.

I'm still unpacking from moving house, so it'll be next week before I can get to the post office! Appreciate your telling me what nibs you like - you know how much I love your handwriting!

Too many landings, too few pictures.....,..

Oh, and NAKAYAAAAAA to you too

+1! I am really digging the Heki-Tamenuri. Does anyone have nice Heki porn?

This thread is horrible. I almost placed an order for a Nakaya! My Sailor Progear isn't even here yet! These pens are just soooo beautiful. Perhaps for my birthday next year. . .

Some poor early morning pictures.

The colour of the pen is burgundy red in reality - my photo skills are non existent. I do have to say that I haven't seen anyones pictures that really show the essence of the pen and its finish. I'm glad I took the leap of faith, sold pens, and bought one.

The nib is stunning and big enough for the pen.

The nib customisation is just as I asked and described.

I hope these give an idea of the pen.

I would like to see more comparisions, side by side , of the Aka Tamenuri and the Heke Tamenuri...

I also would like to see the nib finishes compared, because I think the rhodium or rhudenium ? will look great on the Kuro Tamenuri

pens, but I don't know which I would prefere

I hope everyone is enjoying their pens as much as I am

Lovely pen! Good thing I'm feeling rather immune to aka-tame right now since I have 2 Nakayas, 1 Platinum and at least 1 Danitrio (not so sure about the other one, could be kuro-tame) in that colour. I just love it. Not sure if I will have to get a Naka-ai in another colour though. These are really neat.

I'll grab my camera later and try to make some heki-tame "porn". :roflmho:

I'm looking forward to seeing the Heke !

I have noticed that all the Heke Nakaya sections are coloured , but on the Aka the screwy bits (I can't remember what they are called !!) are black. I wonder why ?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
