Oh My, Look What Came In The Mail!

I know it sounds ridiculous, but I had forgotten that back in February, in a moment of bliss at the Classic Fountain Pens table during the LA Pen Show, I ordered a pen. Not just any pen, but a Nakaya. My third one. Obviously, Ethernautrix and her minions have exerted over me what some might describe as an unhealthy influence. As usual, Jonella and John were more than accommodating (too accommodating?), and so I ordered a pen for which I had longed many years.

Well, a box arrived from Los Angeles containing I knew not what. I thought my sons had purchased some ink for my upcoming birthday but no, the box wasn't quite heavy enough for that. Anyway, I could stand the curiosity no longer and tore open the box, then my memories of the LA Pen Show came back to me.

Here it is, arrived today, a Nakaya Neo Standard in heki-tamenuri urushi, with a 14k BB nib that was ground by John Mottishaw into a stub. I haven't inked the pen yet, as so far I'm content just to stare at it, but I have a pretty good idea how it will write; John Mottishaw is a genius with his work on Nakaya nibs (others, too, but I'm just talking Nakaya here), and after quite a few pens he has a good feel for what I like.

I'm pretty stoked about this particular pen, which is why I'm sharing it with my fellow FPNers, the only people I know who can comprehend the thrill of getting a box in the mail with a new pen. I took some pictures in the setting sun this evening:

Thanks for looking and sharing the moment.

I have that pen's brother (except with a B stub) and it is my favorite. Congratulations, David!

Please post a writing sample when you get around to inking it.

Congrats! Thank you for sharing pictures of your latest pen. I've been trying to resist one of these (in kuro tamenuri) with a CI nib ....

Thanks you guys! I'm going to ink it tomorrow, but I'm stuck trying to decide what ink to use (and yes, you're right, it's not really a Huge Problem). Any suggestions?

Hello David, this is a beautiful pen. I have a similar model and it is extremely comfortable to write with. You will enjoy using that pen. My model has a music nib, and I hope you post some writing samples; I would be interested to see how it compares to a music nib. Ruud

 ain't that just the best when you surprise yourself with a gift like that!

That needs a nice brown or golden colour ink to go with it, maybe even a good bright green ink?

Congratulations. I am sure it will be excellent whatever colour of ink you use.

Don't you love it when you can surprise yourself? 😳 A beautiful pen that will, no doubt, write as well as it looks. Enjoy!

Congratulations, David, on this magnificent pen. I hope to see it soon in the handwritten thread. With a sepia ink perhaps...?

But I, for one, would really start to worry if I had forgotten I ordered such a pen ! smile.gif

Cheers,

Peter

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
