Oh My, Look What Came In The Mail!

Nice, reprieve! Thanks for the link to Shawn's page; I am now following Newton Pens by e-mail.

I've been tempted by his urushi pen. And now by the prison stripes (hee).

I'm in a non-acquisition mode now, so I'm biding my time. Eventually, I'll get around to asking Shawn if he will make a smaller pen, thinner (but, Shawn, don't read this, because I'm not ready!).

I don't want a button-filler, but I am impressed that he's making button-fillers. Man, his trajectory has been speedy!

Stunningly beautiful pen. I love the fact that it emphasizes the natural beauty of the materials used, rather than relying on excessive (IMO) bling, like - for an extreme example - the Montegrappa Stallone Chaos Limited Edition... OK, that is an easy target.

And the nib looks like an excellent writer to boot.

Thanks, the Nakaya urushi never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I look at it.

As far as the narrow lines, I don't "tilt" the pen differently than my normal writing. I hold all pens the same: at about 45 degrees to the page on both a vertical and horizontal axis. That's as close as I can get to technical jargon. The shape of the nib is what provides the narrow lines on side strokes and thicker lines on down strokes. Here's an example with a few stub nibs I have inked today, including the Neo Standard (now inked with Penman Mocha), and a Fine nib at the end:

Edited to add: The wan sun of Northern Minnesota, scarcely thirty days before the solstice, isn't great this time of year!

Pen porn! Woo! Uncap that baby and ink it, ink it!

Oh, pens, all of you are my favorite! TWSBI, Jinhao, Montblanc, Waterman, Danish Penol De Luxe flexy pen, Cross, -- I can't choose between you! That would just be wrong.

This is why my Nakaya on order has a BB stub specified. But the real person to blame for all this BB stubness is Okami and her seductive handwriting...

Beautiful pen, David. Do you like the size and balance of the Neo-Standard? I've just ordered one.

I have a heki-tamenuri Piccolo and enjoy it with Noodlers Sequoia ink. You might enjoy that ink, although it's in a different green family.

In any event, beautiful pen - enjoy!

Thanks HP,

I have a bottle of Noodler's Sequoia but haven't tried it with the Nakaya - will have to do that soon.

As far as comparing the pens, I've only owned Portable Writers and the Neo Standard pictured above. I think I prefer the shape and balance of the Neo Standard to the Portable Writer. The step from barrel to section is smaller on the Neo Standard and it is a tad bit heavier. Also, I seem to prefer a more flattop design as opposed to the cigar shape of the Portable Writer, though I have a fair number of pens in either category. And the New Standard, with its curvy shape, fits very nicely in the hand and just has a certain gravitas, especially in the heki-tamenuri finish.

Can you tell I'm pretty happy with my new Nakaya?!

And Siv, you are going to LOVE that BB stub nib! But it sure took you a long time to get one ordered - Okami wrote a writing sample for you almost two years ago! Her lovely writing is certainly something to which I aspire.

What can I say... good things come to those who procrastinate? It has been a long time, I knew exactly the pen I wanted but I didn't pull the trigger. I can't believe that two year ago I wrote that I wanted a BB stub decapod twist and only just ordered it a month ago.

And I thought i would never see the day that you would be writing with a fine nib, David. And a Japanese fine at that!

By the way, is that Minnesota sun playing tricks on me? In another thread, with decidedly more sunlight, that Penman Mocha looks distinctively brown, while here it looks almost pitch black.

Cheers,

Peter

Peter, haha, you caught me! I have only a few pens with F nibs, and I rarely use them. With big stubs I go through ink like crazy and get to change ink all the time, but with these skinny F nibs a fill takes forever to run out. I've had this one in for nearly a month!

That Penman Mocha is decidedly brown, with a taupe shade to it; I really like the ink. My iPhone pics don't always do the best with colors.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
