The walnut edging sits about 1mm above the veneer it makes a shadow line that I think looks good

Would it look better with a light piece along that edge like this

Edit

I have looked at this all afternoon and it just does not work I will sand it flush as per the origional plan.

Thanks

Michael

There was too much to sand so I have planed the edge trim flush with the top of the veneer.

If you ever do this be careful as the veneer is easy to chip if you catch it with the plane blade

I am looking for a new block plane Lie-Neilson is top of the wish list but I keep thinking how many pens I could buy for that much :roflmho:

I'd say your priorities are skewed a bit.....How many more pens could you buy after selling the boxes you perfect with the plane? roflmho.gif

Esterbex I do understand what you mean I am still in the early days of box refurbishing and box making so I try to keep the cost of the boxes as low as possible.

This also means I do not have loads of boxes taking over the house...... well as long as you dont count the nine writing slopes awaiting restoration oh and a couple of large cutlery boxes and the three small cutlery boxes that I had forgotton about until now.

I dont offer boxes for sale after I had problems with the sale of the first writing slope which is now in the garage.

Some of the FPN members who have my boxes have been kind enough to add to my Parker collection which is my favourite method of payment.

Best wishes

Michael

The top of the Alc box has now been smoothed off I have not sanded the top completly flat it is very tactile.

I have not removed the veneer this is the bottom of the box I collected the extra walnut to finish the bottom and the oak for the trays today.

I dry fitted the base in place and glued the final walnut strip to the base.

The base is such a tight fit it will not come out I am sure it will pop out when the box is cut in half.

I will be applying a sanding sealer after another few hours of sanding

The edges of the walnut need to be sanded flush with the oak and the box is ready for cutting.

If I have not explained before the box is made four sides a top and bottom in one piece.

when complete it is marked and cut into two pieces lid and base which means the grain matches and the two pieces are a perfect fit.

Thanks

Yesterday morning I started making trays for alc3261s box there are three trays so I clamped my cutting box to my bench, I then cut two blocks of wood to act as stops one for the long length and one for the short length.

Using my pull saw I cut the ends square

IMG_9892 by my0771, on Flickr

Once cut to the correct length I used my sander to make the mitre joints on each piece.

I used the usual method of masking tape to hold everything together whilst the glue set.

I will confess that when I made the trays I did not allow alot of clearence well to be honest i did not allow any. :headsmack:

My sander will soon sort that little problem :clap1:

It now looks like this it is American Madrona burr (burl) veneer.

Because the lid is so thin I was not able to clamp it after glueing so I used a process called hammer veneering.

The glue is applied and allowed to almost dry the a special tool called a veneer hammer and a hot iron are used to stick the two together.

A veneer hammer is a piece of wood with a strip of brass that is used to apply pressure to the veneer.

Sorry there is a problem with my flickr account

It looks wonderful Michael. Glad that the box you are modifying for me could give you a new challenge, just what you needed, I am sure! I had not heard of a veneer hammer before so had to look that one up. For those who are curious, here is an interesting tutorial about using and making a veneer hammer: Making a veneer hammer

I hope your problems with your flickr account are easily fixed, Michael - we need more pictures! :P

I have to be honest I have had some problems with the Art Decco box That I converted for Esterbex I made a mistake with the size of the trays.

I will be fixing the problems but it has knocked my confidence a little.

So although I don't have pictures alc3261 I have cut your box into two pieces all of the trays are complete and fit inside and the lid closes. Once I have started the lining process the trays will be double checked and finish applied.

The hinges I selected are out of stock in both uk suppliers so I am looking at alternatives.

I will take pictures ASAP.

Holly your veneer is beautiful but it will take some time to complete as it is quite intricate

Thanks

This is Alc3261 s box if you look closely you will see the cut it was cut by hand as my router was not powerful enough.

I kept the lid shallow as there are three trays inside if the lid was too deep it would catch on the upper tray.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o
