I thought I would try this as a little poll. I have recently found out what "Pix" means as engraved under Montblanc clips and am interested to find out if it's common knowledge.

This has been extensively discussed in the past. Bottom line; no one but montblanc knows and they ain't telling.

I invite all members who vote "yes" to please be so kind and enlighten us.

Oh! Well maybe I'm not supposed to know then.

Maybe someone will come along and enlighten us. I will give it a while.

As pen jubky stated, there have been several threads on this, and I don't remember anyone mentioning what the word means. It was used on vintage mechanical pencils specifically.

I have searched for other threads, but none came up.

It is particularly noteworthy that it was used on vintage mechanical pencils specifically

I know what I've read on this and other websites. Whether or not it is gospel though I have no idea.

I think it is there way of adding something "different" to the pen in a strange font as a means of making it harder to counterfeits.

As no-one else has come forward to enlighten us all I will pass on what I believe.

It originally came from the sound that the mechanical pencil made while being used. :eureka:

I recall reading somewhere (probably in the MB book I bought in Fred's group buy) that when MB looked to get a share of the mechanical pencil market, they acquired a company that had the repeater mechanism. Those pens, produced for MB had the pix logo.

It may have been a marketing concept by MB to distinguish their mechanism from other pen makers pencils, that typically used twist action. It was a big deal to have this mechanism as with one push of the knob, the lead would extend a pre-measured amount, that was optimal for use and did not require the user to determine how much lead/graphite to twist out of the pencil. The clicking sound may have also been part of the mechanism's marketing name. I'll try to dig up the book and confirm.

cheers

The important point is that it is a trade mark that MB used as an early attempt to limit fakes, but just as with castle walls and cannons, it was likely less than a day before the fake makers also started sticking it under the clip.

The answer:

According to people who might have been there, or might have known someone who might have been there, it is the result of a mixup at the original design meetings.

The engraver was describing his concept for the lettering. An executive couldn't grasp the details of the engraver's design and uttered the now infamous words, "This discussion is useless without pix."

The engraver include "pix" in the engraving, and the rest is, as they say, history.

Only speculation/ opinion and no concrete evidence so far. I will await Wael's response. Thank you for the letdown Chrissy. I am very disappointed with this poll; and with all the so-called savants that voted yes but had no proof to back it up.gaah.gif

As we all sound a bit 'vague' on this I may as well continue. I 'think' it is some form of MB patent to do with the inner workings of their mechanical pencil. I cannot elaborate any further and where I gleened that info from is lost as well.

Next time I am near to a MB store I will ask. Waste of time I know but there is one sales person in particular I would like to bowl this question at.

I have given you the information that was passed onto me. I can't produce any 'concrete evidence' but I trust my source 100%.

I should have known that there would be differences of opinion.

If you have a mechanical pencil then try writing with it and imagine what you might call the sound you hear. :hmm1:

Bit like the well known Crown Court scene in Manchester a few years ago.

Defence : "the document we require is still in Liverpool your worship"

Prosecution : "fax it up"

Judge : "yes I suppose it does"

I think some people need to lighten up, heck, it's an amusing discussion and finding out the real reason isn't exactly crucial to life as we know it..... Could we add to the poll a 4th option - I don't know and I'm really not that bothered...... ?

Aysedasi if I could delete the whole thing I would. It started out as a 'fun poll' but someone turned it into a witchhunt

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
