Bespoke Mb Nibs

I recently saw an article in Pen World describing a new service at select MB boutiques, using a computerized approach to custom nib grinding for new MB pens. Has anyone tried this service, or know anything more? I think they charge an additional $800 for this service!

I will be writing an article on this service for a well-known pen collector magazine, after some interviews and participation in the program. Montblanc is placing a few of the devices in locations around the world. They use laser in some fashion. Once your preference is established, it is recorded for future nib orders.

More soon.

$800 extra is pretty steep, I could just send it to a nibmeister.

Brad

I agree. I'm wondering what difference there is using a computer generated nib versus a modification of a nib by a nibmeister.

I thought it was a matter of the user adjusing to the nib rather than the nib adjusting to the user?

Which is what makes buying variations of pens so interesting in that they all have different nib characteristics which you can enjoy!

The bespoke service sounds interesting ... but I fail to see how the pen would write $800 better than the standard MB nib which I'm already very, very happy with!

In storage: Too many to name.

can't agree with you more. I will rather spend $800 for another pen to start with the discovery. :)

It would be interesting to have the exact same nib duplicated - but then who wants it!!!!

Variations in nibs sizes and pen sizes are what I crave for - although the variation I have are all on the broader side of mediums, nevertheless B of one is at times broader than BB of another and so on. And then there are the stubs and the Obliques!!!!

In short I do not think I could stick with with just one nib for life.

Enjoy your pens

Have a nice day

I am sure there was a link posted on here that showed you what it was all about. Computer screen illustrating all the various 'quirks' about how you held the pen and the angle of preference etc.

When I was into clay shooting I once had a Perrazi shotgun fitted to me. I already felt this was a well fitting gun and was very pleased with both the stock and fore end but must admit that it felt like it truly was an extension of my body when fitted professionally.

Would I pay to have a pen tuned for me? Yes I usually do by my nib chap but $800 seems a lot on the steep side to me.

There is a special calligraphy nib that was developed with MB by this famous calligrapher. This is HER SITE --great stuff!

I dream of MB asking me to develop a drawing nib!! Although it would probably be like the one Richard Binder did for me, so they really should just ask him. LOL

What I'm wondering is, given MB's amazing ability to make ordinary nibs that don't write well, why should I believe they can make a custom nib that will write any better?

I have never had a MB nib that wrote less than very well while nibs from other pen companies have been sub-standard many needing to be tuned to even bring it up to a minimum standard for smoothness and flow.

Maybe it's the same thing as audiophiles- if your ear can hear the difference then it's worth it but if you ear can't then it is wasted money, just something to say that I got my pen MBinderized so it's much better.

Always look on the bright side of life.

I agree. I own over a dozen MB fountain pens, and most have had to be sent to a nibmeister to adjust flow/nib before they could function as great writers. I love their design, but they never seem to write perfectly without adjustment. I am intrigued, though, bye the idea of a computerized nib adjusted to the way you write. The cost is excessive, but still wondering what the final product would produce.

  • 3 months later...

After our FPN factory tour in March, and taking the writing analysis test right there in the nib manufacturing boardroom, I ordered 2 bespoke nibs for 149's. One is a soft OB nib to use as a daily (or special occasion) writer, the other is a double-slit signature nib (6B at least, music nib style, it writes like a paintbrush!)

The pens arrived today, I tried them out this evening, and I am totally gobsmacked.... :puddle:

Pictures to follow, hopefully still this weekend

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
